| Abu Dhabi Alumni Association Gala Dinner | ||||
| - The AUB Alumni Association of Abu Dhabi held its annual Gala Dinner on June 3 at the Abu Dhabi Intercontinental Hotel. Some 250 AUB alumni and friends attended. After a welcoming reception, President of the association Mohamad Sleiman declared the dinner open and thanked the AUB Abu Dhabi alumni and friends for their loyalty and support. Sleiman especially thanked the Abu Dhabi Committee members for their dedication and hard work. Such loyalty has helped raise $1.8 million for AUB through the Abu Dhabi branch and other alumni residing in Abu Dhabi since 1985. Sleiman noted that they have set a target of $2 million for the year's end. He talked about the scholarship support that the Abu Dhabi Alumni have been granting AUB and touched upon the Campus Master Plan, the theme of this year's function.President John Waterbury expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Abu Dhabi alumni and the committee for their untiring support of their alma mater. President Waterbury especially referred to financial aid for bright needy students at AUB, noting that the University had almost tripled its financial aid budget in the last four years from $2 million to over $6 million. He spoke about the Campus Master Plan, which was very beautifully presented in the Alumni | Book.
It represented a commitment by AUB to put in $150 million for a twenty-year
Master Plan for the physical development of the AUB Campus. President Waterbury asked Abu Dhabi alumni and friends to support this initiative. HE Dr. Salim El-Hoss, this year's guest of honor, talked about how proud he was to be a graduate of AUB. He has also been honored to serve as a member of its Board of Trustees for many years. He referred to AUB graduates as leaders in their domains, and talked about the values that AUB represents and propagates in tolerance and democratic upbringing. Dr El-Hoss urged alumni and friends to support AUB, enabling it to continue in its leading role. In addition to President Waterbury, representing AUB, were: Special Assistant to the President for Development and Alumni Affairs Mr. Nazih Zeidan, and Director of Development and External Affairs, Dr Imad Baalbaki. The Lebanese Ambassador in UAE, Mr. Hasan Berro also attended the dinner. Earlier in the day, the Abu Dhabi Alumni president held a lunch dedicated to donors and AUB alumni leaders. The Abu Dhabi Alumni also organized a visit to Zayed University, one of the leading new universities in the UAE. |
