  Toy Tea Party    
  -      In the beautiful gardens of Marquand House, the Women's Auxiliary of the AUBMC held its annual "Toy Tea Party" on June 27. The party, which attracted some 300 people, marked the climax of the Auxiliary's yearly activities.
      The ceremony began with the national anthem followed by the AUB Alma Mater. Mrs. Nabila Firzli, president of the Women's Auxiliary, then welcomed Dr. Ann Marie Karam, wife of HE Dr. Karam Karam Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Marianne Heath wife of Provost Peter Heath, Mr. and Mrs. John Rhoder, Director of AUBMC, Dr. Salwa Makarem Director of the School of Nursing, and the honorable members and friends of the Women's Auxiliary.
      In her speech Mrs. Firzli stated that "giving a toy to a sick child is to introduce joy in his heart, as manifested by a smile on his face." She added that the Women's Auxiliary is always striving to help needy patients from all over Lebanon, to support the hospital, and to serve the community and humanity. Moreover, "the success of the Women's Auxiliary is due to the devotion and sacrifices of volunteers in all the divisions, the Coffee Shop, the Bargain Box and the Escort Service."
      Mrs. Firzli extended special thanks to Dr. John Waterbury, president of AUB for hosting the party at Marquand House. President Waterbury could not join the event as usual, due to previous commitments. She also thanked Ms. Samia Saab for sharing her artistic talents by presenting a fashion show from boutique Al-Sarab entitled "Modern Adaptation of Our Heritage."
      On this occasion the Women's Auxiliary offers
awards to distinguished nursing graduates as well as a full scholarship in the name of Annette Hajjar to a student selected by the Faculty of Nursing.
      Dr. Salwa Makarem, director of the School of Nursing conveyed her gratitude to the members of the Women's Auxiliary for honoring eight new graduates, and for continuing the Arnette Hajjar scholarship fund.
      Dr. Makarem addressed the Women's Auxiliary volunteers by saying "your innumerable accomplishments attest to your commitment to promote the health of our society, and to enhance the viability of the nursing profession. These decisions and actions reflect the value you place on humanism, and the undivided goal of the School of Nursing to further nursing education and practice."
      Dr. Makarem presented awards to eight graduates. (See box below).
      On behalf of the hospital administration Mr. John Rhoder expressed his admiration and acknowledged the volunteer services and their "selfless generosity." He emphasized the importance of the "Nabila Firzli Emergency Fund" in providing financial aid to needy patients in emergency cases.
      The glamorous fashion show presented by Ms. Samia Saab was the highlight of the event. Ms. Saab, who has participated in many international fairs, has received numerous awards. She started a new line of fashion and a notable collection of traditional clothes. Her interest and contributions to Lebanese heritage is invaluable.
      This presentation, which included oriental music and dancing delighted the audience. The ceremony ended with the traditional "Cup of Tea" and a buffet of goodies.
