Dr. Nagi Saghir
  Dealing with Cancer    
  -      In a public lecture on April 16, Dr Nagi Saghir, clinical associate professor of hematology and oncology at AUB, spoke on "Dealing with Cancer: Either a Curable or Chronic Disease." Held under the auspices of VP Nadim Cortas at Dar An-Nadwa at Piccadilly in Hamra, the lecture was attended by President of Dar An-Nadwa Dr Monah El-Solh, President of the Lebanese Order of Physicians Dr Mahmoud Choucair, Dr Mounir Shammaa, Dr Ismail Sukkariyeh, and other physicians, politicians and dignitaries.
      Dr Saghir was introduced by Dr Kamal Bikhazi representing Dr Nadim Cortas. Dr Saghir explained that cancer should no longer be considered "that other disease". He explained that we now understand the mechanisms of cancer formation and we have new treatments that are specific for cancer in the present era of molecular medicine. 		      In addition to prevention and early detection for better and more successful surgery, more advanced chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the newer medications target known cell surface proteins or enzymatic pathways and lead to the death of cancer cells, sparing normal body cells.
      These medications are now being applied in chronic myeloid leukemia and some in lymphoma and breast cancer. They are also are finding newer applications in other cancers according to on-going research.
      Dr Saghir said that some of these medications should be taken for many years, either as injections or as tablets. Therefore we are at a stage where we should no longer fear cancer. We are able to detect it and cure it, or treat some cancers like hypertension or heart disease, by daily medication.
