Dr. Joseph Azar
  Dr Joseph E. Azar Dies    
  -      It is with great sorrow and sadness that the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences and the University announce the death of Professor Emeritus Dr. Joseph Azar on July 18, 2002.
      Dr. Azar was born in Bshamoun, Lebanon in 1919. After graduating from AUB with a BA in 1942 and an MD in 1946, he trained in internal medicine, epidemiology and biostatistics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He then toured various institutes of tropical medicine in south and tropical Africa .
      Azar joined AUB as University physician in 1948 and became assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicine in 1952. He served as a dual appointee of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Health Sciences until 1965, when he became full professor and chairman of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics until his retirement in 1984.
       The recipient of many honors, he presided over the Lebanese Public Heath Association for two terms and the Medical Alumni Association (AUB) for two terms. He was elected president of the Lebanese Order of Physicians 1973-75.
      Dr. Azar contributed to the development of public health and epidemiology at AUB and in Lebanon and was actively involved in teaching both disciplines at the two faculties. He published original work on schistosomiasis and tuberculosis in Lebanon.
      Dr. Azar is survived by his wife Joyce and daughters Mrs. Victoria Azar Moyle and Dr. Aida Azar Bu Khaled, and his sons, Drs. Elias and Basem.Funeral services were held Friday, July 19 at St. Mary's Church (Saydeh), Makhoul Street, Ras Beirut .
