The FAFS Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) is launching
a Community Development Initiative (CDI) to build on the expertise gained
from the many projects under its umbrella, fostering partnerships between
communities and development actors. In the framework of CDI, a launching workshop for the establishment of a Capacity Building Network for Community Development (CBN) was organized on May 22. The workshop brought together scientists, policy-makers and development actors in an effort to formulate integrated R&D strategies. Among the participants were representatives of many embassies, international and governmental organizations, some national NGOs and a group of journalists from Reuters. The three-session workshop was held in the FAFS auditorium with a parallel exhibition of community development projects and products displayed under Bedouin tents in the agricultural parking lot 1- An introductory session with a welcome from Vice President for Regional External Programs Dr. George Najjar and an introduction to the workshop aims and objectives by IGESP Director Dr. Rami Zurayk and ESDU Coordinator and coordinator of the workshop Dr. Shadi Hamadeh. A mime presentation entitled "Communities Before and After" came next, and a coffee break followed . 2- A keynote session with five speakers: |
a. Dr. Berge Hatjian, Director General MoE:
MoE activities and plans b. Mr. Joseph Torbey, Director General of Cooperatives MoA: The potential of cooperatives as a vehicle for community development. c. Ms. Nihmaat Kanaan, Director General MoSA: MoSA activities and plans. d. Mr. Elie Kodsi, Regional Director UNDP Dryland Development Center: Community Development, the donors' perspective e. Mr. Berthold Hansmann, GTZ Technical Advisor CoDeL Project: Natural resource management and community development. This session was followed by a traditional lunch in the faculty courtyard garden. 3- A discussion session with three working groups, as described below, followed by a plenary session: a. Health, nutrition, education and community development. b. Natural resource management, appropriate technologies and community development. c. Community Development, a Lebanese overview. The workshop was a good opportunity for AUB faculty to gain exposure to community development efforts and strategies by the government and major donors, and to highlight AUB contributions to community development in different fields |
