The Anis Khoury Makdisi Program in Literature
  -     On July 26, 2002 AUB announced the creation of the Anis Khoury Makdisi Program in Literature, an interdisciplinary program in literary studies within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. An initial gift has been given to start an endowment for the new program in the name of Professor Anis K. Makdisi, a distinguished scholar, writer, poet, and teacher at AUB. Professor Makdisi taught at AUB for 40 years, chairing the Arabic department for 25 years until his retirement in 1950, after which he was appointed Professor Emeritus.
He enriched the lives of many generations of AUB students in the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and 50s, and inspired new understanding of Arabic literature in the Arab world. He was the author of influential books and numerous articles on Arabic literature and language and a member of the Cairo and Damascus Arab Language Academies. He is honored by his students and associates throughout the Arab world for his contributions to literary scholarship and for his own poetry.
The aim of the new program is to develop literary and humanistic studies at AUB and to encourage an openness to different cultural forms and traditions in literature. The Anis K. Makdisi Program in Literature will foster intellectual dialogue and scholarly exchange among members of different departments,
their students, and visiting scholars. The Program's activities will include seminar and lecture series on various topics in cultural and literary studies. Other formal and informal gatherings will be hosted on the campus to provide a forum for scholarly dialogue among the various academic communities in Lebanon. In addition, two student scholarships will be awarded annually.
The centerpiece of the program will be the Anis K. Makdisi Memorial Lecture, to be held annually at AUB and to be given by a leading scholar of literature or a noted author of prose or poetry.
The Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences has appointed Professor Maher Jarrar as Director of the program. He is assisted by an advisory committee that includes AUB faculty (Professors Peter Heath and Asa'd Khairallah) and scholars from outside the University (to be named). In addition the list includes one member of the family of Anis K. Makdisi (Professor Saree Makdisi)
The Anis Khoury Makdisi Program in Literature, which will be inaugurated in October 2002, is an exciting initiative for AUB. It represents the University's commitment to excellence in scholarship at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and its desire to promote cultural dialogue and the exchange of ideas among various academic disciplines in the literary community.
