A large problem in recycling on campus is keeping contaminants out of the recycling. Here are some tips for improving recycling

- Cans and bottles should be deposited without any beverages or lids into the appropriate recycling bins.

- Paper should be placed into appropriate recycling bins, without any trash or food.

- Cardboard boxes should be flattened and discarded in the appropriate place for recycling.

- Try to buy products with recycled materials or packaging, to help sustain the market for recycled materials.

Tips to reduce the use of paper

- Use electronic communication when possible instead of paper, and avoid printing every email you receive.

- Post notices rather than distribute copies to all staff.

- Reuse inter-office envelops and folders.

- If your department receives duplicate or unwanted catalogues, call or write the company.

- Circulate (rather than copy) memos, documents, periodicals, and reports.

- Use the unprinted side of used paper, make two-sided copies.

- Save documents on disks and hard drives
