-Interesting Topic1

- Recycling 1 ton of paper saves, on average, up to 17 trees and prevents air and water pollution.

- The 17 trees saved (above) can absorb a total of 113.6 Kg of carbon dioxide from the air each year. Burning that same ton of paper would create 681.8 Kg of carbon dioxide.

- Recycling 1 ton of newspapers saves, on average, up to 15 trees.

- Every tree provides oxygen enough for 3 people to breathe.

- Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 4.2 MWh or enough energy to power a computer for almost one year.

- Recycling half the world’s paper would free 20 million acres forestland.

- Recycling a “refreshments can” saves 96% of the energy used to make a new can from ore, and produces 95% less air emissions, and 97% less water pollutants.

- Recycling 1 ton of aluminum saves the equivalent in energy of 8896 liters of gasoline. This is equivalent to the amount of fuel needed to provide a typical home with electricity for a period of 10 years.

- Every ton of recycled glass saves 600 kg of sand, 196 kg of soda ash, 196 kg of limestone, and 68 kg of feldspar.

- To produce one “refreshments can” from ore requires energy equivalent to half a “can” of gasoline.

- Recycling plastics saves twice as much as energy as burning.

- Recycling rubber is used in boat bumpers, carpet padding, and wire and pipe instillation.

- Cartridge recycling is a $90 million-a-year business.

- The average Lebanese throws away 1 kg of trash every day.

- In Lebanon, paper products constitute around 25% of generated trash.

- Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours -- or the equivalent of 1.8927 liters of gasoline.

- 350,000 aluminum cans are produced every minute, and during the time it takes you to read this sentence, 50,000 340.19 gram aluminum cans are made.

- An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now.

- A 60-watt light bulb can be run for over a day on the amount of energy saved by recycling 453.5924 gram of steel. In one year in the United States, the recycling of steel saves enough energy to heat and light 18,000,000 homes.

- If you had a 15-year-old tree and made it into paper grocery bags, you'd get about 700 of them. A supermarket could use all of them in under an hour! This means in one year, one supermarket goes through 60,500,000 paper bags.

- Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000 sea creatures every year.

- The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials.

- On average, it costs $30 per ton to recycle trash, $50 to send it to the landfill, and $65 to $75 to incinerate it.

- Producing steel from recycled material saves 75% of the energy needed for steel made from virgin material.

- The energy saving from recycling one bottle will:

  • Power a 100 watt light bulb for almost an hour
  • Power a computer for 25 minutes
  • Power a color TV for 20 minutes
  • Power a washing machine for 10 minutes

Composition of an average dump.

By the end of 2005, URP has managed to recycle:

  • 380 tons of paper and cardboard. In terms of energy and resources conservation, this translates into savings:
    - 6460 trees
    - over 6.08 million liters of water
    - 1596 MWh of electricity
    - 925 cubic meters of landfills
  • 17 tons of glass, saving:
    - 10 tons of sand
    - 3.13 tones of limestone
    - 2.99 less mining waste
  • 472 kg of cans, saving:
    - 4198 liters of gasoline
    - 619 kg less CO2 emissions
  • 935 cartridges and ribbons
