This involves the use of small fiberoptic scopes, which can be passed through the urethra, to picture the lining of the urinary tract from the kidneys to the bladder without the need for invasive surgery. Other devices, including lasers, graspers and specially designed scalpels among others, can be inserted through tubes, so operations can be carried out without making any incisions at all.

These techniques are used to treat a variety of conditions, including kidney, ureter and bladder stones, tumours of the urinary tract and other blockages of the ureter and urethra. Prostate tissue can also be removed using this method.

Approximately 25% of the patients treated by the Urology Divison at the Medical Center involve endourology. Ureteroscopy and all forms of lithotripsy are available, including lithoclast, the Holmium: Yag laser, Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy and percutaneous surgery for stone extraction.
