The Division of Urology at the American University of Beirut Medical Center has been known for its pioneering work and academic mission since its inception in the early days of Dr. Bahij Azoury and Dr. Kamal Hemady in the 1980s. The heritage of this division goes back to the early days of Dr. Jedijian who did the early prostatectomies in Lebanon in the 1940s before the birth of the division in the ‘80s.
The Division is dedicated to provide the highest quality clinical care, along with commitment in offering the best medical education and training to graduate students and residents.
Since the inception of the residency program in 1980, the Division has graduated more than 15 urologists who have excelled in their specialties and taken variable routes in academic or private practice. There has been a magnificent growth in size and diversity in the past 10 years, particularly with the inception of subspecialties in 1995. In the past decade, the Division has doubled its full time staff to 4 members, and the associate staff to 7 members, and has expanded into subspecialty training to fulfill and encompass all domains of modern urology. At present, these specialties that are covered by the division include Endourology, General Urology, Infertility, Laparoscopic Urology & Minimally Invasive Surgery, Lithotripsy, Neurourology, Pediatric Urology, Prostate Center, Sexual Dysfunction, Transplantation, and Urologic Oncology. Nevertheless, the emphasis that has been put forth in the past decade and has put our institution at the cutting edge of healthcare in the Middle East is the development of the prostate center, the minimally invasive laparoscopic and endoscopic urology, and the creation of a state of the art renal transplant unit.
In the past 5 years, the residency program has also expanded, accepting one resident a year for a period of 4 years. We have increased our affiliation to include several key centers in the area, including neighboring states, and have accepted special fellows for higher training in urology from these institutions.
Our dedication to the field of urology and the commitment of our physicians to provide the highest degree of comprehensive medical and surgical care, with the philosophy of collecting a huge database for clinical research, has enabled us to produce several key manuscripts in variable domains of urology. These have been most pronounced in the contributions in the field of prostate cancer, PSA testing, minimally invasive surgery, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, bladder cancer, endourology and stone disease.
With the continued growth and development of the Division and the University, our efforts in the next several years will be directed to urologic oncology, and will encompass basic research and genetic manipulation, including vaccine therapy for kidney and prostate tumors. The work will be conducted with affiliated urological programs in the United States, and we shall continue our commitment to the highest quality of care, according to American standards. We are extremely proud of our Division’s commitment to research and advancement of science, inkeeping with the commitment of health care delivery in the region.
This website is a result of 2 years of dedicated work and preparation by the urologic office and staff, which was put into its current format by Mr. Malek Racy to whom we shall always be indebted.
