Urinary incontinence is an inability to stop or control the flow of urine from the bladder. It is a fairly common problem, affecting both sexes, though more common in women and older people. Common causes include:
- urinary tract infection
- as a side effect of medication
- weakness of muscles in/around the bladder
- bladder irritation
- blocked urethra (usually due to an enlarged prostate in men)
Many of the causes for urinary incontinence are temporary and the symptoms disappear once the cause has been removed. For permanent causes, incontinence can usually be treated or at least controlled.
A variety of treatments are available, such as behavioral therapy, exercise, regulation of diet, medication or surgery.
