| The
Division of Neurosurgery was established in 1955 when Dr. Fuad Sami
Haddad, the first neurosurgeon in Lebanon and the Middle East, returned
from his training at McGill University in Canada. The structured residency
training program in neurosurgery started in 1979 and consisted of
3 years of clinical neurosurgery following one year of internship
and one year of general surgery. The first resident to complete the
program was Dr. Camille Salameh who graduated in 1981. Since then,
the program has evolved into a comprehensive training given over a
5 year period following one year of internship and one year of general
surgery.
The Division of Neurosurgery is the most comprehensive Neurosurgery
Program in the region, providing diagnosis and management for a
wide spectrum of neurological disorders. All members of the Division
are American or Canadian Board certified. The Division is active
clinically and academically - its members participate on a regular
basis as speakers or guest speakers in national and international
conferences. They have contributed extensively to the neurological
literature including standard textbooks of Neurosurgery. It is regarded
as a pace setter in Neurosurgery in the Middle East.
