of Virginia visited the Department from April 14 to 18, 2002.
The aim of his visit was to help us establish a telemedicine
program between our Departments and build AUB as a regional
center for telemedicine. He gave the Surgical and Medical Grand
Rounds and the General Surgery Conference, met with the residents
and students and visited the AUB Campus, Jeita, Byblos and downtown
Beirut. Dr. Merrell is training two of our graduates, Ramzi
Alami and Hatem Halabi. We are grateful for his visit and for
his efforts to help the Department. We look forward to a collaborative
program in telemedicine. |

June 3 marked the establishment
of the AFIF RAJA ILIYA NEUROSCIENCE LIBRARY in the Division
of Neurosurgery, made possible by generous donations from members
of Dr. Iliya's family and friends. Dr. Afif Iliya received his
MD degree from AUB in 1978 and did one year of residency training
here before going to Syracuse for his neurosurgery training.
He then joined the faculty at Stoneybrook in NY until a few
years ago when he decided to move into private practice. He
passed away in January 2002 at the young age of 48 years. The
Department mourns his premature death and thanks his family
and friends for their generous donation. Donations are still
being accepted. |

of the Department's General Surgery Program in 1997, is a member
of the Scientific Committee of the Order of Physicians of the
North of Lebanon and Editor-in-Chief of its publication, the

Dr. Halabi and his Editorial Board deserve congratulations.
