The 37th Middle East Medical Assembly was held from May 2-5, 2002 and was a great success. There were 47 invited speakers from abroad covering the following subjects: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and the perioperative management of the patient with pulmonary disease, endocrinology, evidence-based medicine, molecular medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, pediatrics, primary care and urology. This year, Urology was the only represented surgical specialty and had one full day on urologic oncology and half a day on female urology. The invited speakers for the urology program were Dr. Firouz Daneshgari from the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Tony Khoury from the University of Toronto, Dr. Edson Pontes from Wayne State University and Dr. Horst Zincke from the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Ronald Merrell, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia visited the Department from April 14 to 18, 2002. The aim of his visit was to help us establish a telemedicine program between our Departments and build AUB as a regional center for telemedicine. He gave the Surgical and Medical Grand Rounds and the General Surgery Conference, met with the residents and students and visited the AUB Campus, Jeita, Byblos and downtown Beirut. Dr. Merrell is training two of our graduates, Ramzi Alami and Hatem Halabi. We are grateful for his visit and for his efforts to help the Department. We look forward to a collaborative program in telemedicine.
Dr. Ali Araj, resident in the Division of Neurosurgery won the Middle East Medical Assembly's first prize for Best Research for his work on "A New Device for Neuronavigation without Skull Fixation in Awake Craniotomies for Tumor Resection in Eloquent Brain under Local Anesthesia". His co-workers were Joe Wakim and Fadi Saikali from the Department of Medical Engineering, Drs. Elie Louak and Mohamad Zakaria from the Division of Neurosurgery and Dr. Youssef Comair, Chief, Division of Neurosurgery. Congratulations.
June 3 marked the establishment of the AFIF RAJA ILIYA NEUROSCIENCE LIBRARY in the Division of Neurosurgery, made possible by generous donations from members of Dr. Iliya's family and friends. Dr. Afif Iliya received his MD degree from AUB in 1978 and did one year of residency training here before going to Syracuse for his neurosurgery training. He then joined the faculty at Stoneybrook in NY until a few years ago when he decided to move into private practice. He passed away in January 2002 at the young age of 48 years. The Department mourns his premature death and thanks his family and friends for their generous donation. Donations are still being accepted.
Dr. Jamil Halabi, a graduate of the Department's General Surgery Program in 1997, is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Order of Physicians of the North of Lebanon and Editor-in-Chief of its publication, the Lebanese Journal of Medical Sciences. It is an excellent publication. Dr. Halabi and his Editorial Board deserve congratulations. The April 2002 issue of the journal has two articles by two members of our faculty, Dr. Ismail Khalil and Dr. Said Saghieh.
This year, the Department is graduating 3 residents. Dr. Christian
Al-Amm, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Dalal Aziz, General Surgery and Dr. Elie Louak, Neurosurgery. Christian is accepted for an accredited fellowship in craniofascial surgery and for one year of research in head and neck cancer at the Medical City in Dallas, Texas. Dalal is joining her husband in Canada and will apply for fellowship in laparoscopy. Elie is going to Necker Hospital in Paris, France, for fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery. The Department congratulates them, wishes them all the success in their careers and thanks them for all their efforts during their years with us.
