Superior rectus overaction/contracture syndrome: prevalence, characteristics and etiology

This project is on-going with second-year residents' examinations of cases of Hyperopia, seen the last 5 years, not due to DVD or cyclovertical muscle palsiens, but to contracted as well as overacting superior rectus muscle. We are studying its prevalence, clinical manifestation, etiology and management results. E. Khawam, N. Ghazi, H. Salti.

Correction of the inadequate inferior fornix in the anophthalmic socket

This study reported a modification of the technique described by Neuhaus and Hawes for the reformation of the inferior fornix in the anophthalmic socket, at the same time avoiding the risk of lower lid sagging or entropion. R. Ma’luf.

The bacterial flora of the ocular fornix in patients with lacrimal silicone tubes

This study was conducted to assess any change of the bacterial flora of the ocular fornix during the period when the silicone tube is in place. These tubes are usually inserted during a regular Dacryocystorhinostomy. If at all present, should the change in the bacterial flora present any increased risk in case any intraocular surgery is to be done? R. Ma’luf,. G. Dbaibo, G. Araj, B. Noureddin. (Supported by LNCSR.)

Involutional entropion in a child with Cutis Laxa

This paper aimed at reporting the histopathological changes in the skin and tarsal plate of a patient with Cutis Laxa. In addition we report the new finding of involutional entropion in this child with Cutis Laxa. R. Ma’luf, N. Ghazi, A. Tawil.

Bone erosion caused by orbital cavernous hemangioma

This paper reports the unusual finding of bone erosion in a benign orbital tumor: cavernous hemangioma. R. Ma’luf, N. Khoury, U. Hadi.

Additivity of brominidine to maximal medical therapy in the treatment of glaucoma

A prospective study to assess the addidivity of Brominidine to maximal medical treatment. Methods: 25 patients with bilateral poorly controlled glaucoma on maximal medical treatment, had Brominidine 0.2% drops added to one eye, while the fellow eye served as control. Results: There was a significant drop in intraocular pressure (IOP), in the study eye from a mean of 32.52 mmHg to that of 23.68, 22.40 and 22.52 mmHg, at 1,3 and 6 months of follow up, (p < 0.001). There was no change in the IOP status of the control eyes, (p > 0.5). 2 patients discontinued Brominidine because of side effects. Conclusion: Brominidine can help in controlling the IOP in eyes on maximal medical treatment. B.N. Noureddin, A. Khouri, Z. Bashshur.

The role of rescula in decreasing intraocular pressure: a comparative prospective study with betaxolol

Fourteen patients were newly diagnosed to have primary open angle glaucoma. Mean IOP > 21 mmHg (Diurnal curve). The patients’ mean initial IOP were 27.6 ± 4.29 mmHg (range 23 to 38 mmHg). They received ( Rescula) eye drops bid. The IOP was measured at 2 weeks and at 3 months. The IOP was significantly lowered to a mean of 21.8 ± 5.60 mmHg (range 16 to 39 mmHg ), (P< 0.001) two weeks after initiating therapy in 25 eyes. The same was true for the 2 months of therapy IOP that was significantly reduced to a mean of 21.10 ± 4.22 mmHg (range 16 to 37 mmHg), (P < 0.001). These fourteen patients were matched with fourteen other patients with the same diagnosis, and who were on Betoptic 0.5 % bid, and their IOPs were measured at 2 weeks and 3 months. A comparison between the outcome of the 2 therapies is presented.B.N. Noureddin, H.I. Salti. (Supported by CIBA Vision.)
