Failure of fertilization after intracytoplasmic sperm injection in patient with Kartagner’s syndrome and totally immotile spermatozoa A
case of Kartagner’s syndrome with totally immotile spermatozoa and who
failed to fertilize oocytes after intracytoplasmic sperm injection is described.
The role of assisted technology in these patients is reviewed and discussed.

Effect of human follicular fluid on sperm survival test Spermatozoa
obtained from fertile men are incubated with Ham’s F-10 only and Ham’s
F-10 supplemented with 20% follicular fluid or 20% semen. Sperm motility
is recorded every 12 hours for 48 hours. The effect of follicular fluid

Cervical cancer treated with external radiation alone The
objective of our study is to assess the response and the 5 year disease-free
survival (DFS) in 86 patients with cervical cancer treated with external
radiation (ER) alone at the American University of Beirut Medical Center,
from 1977 until 1992. Results: The mean age of patients was 53.9
±
13.1 years. The mean dose of ER was 6509 ±
1263 cGy. Mean duration of treatment was 6.3 weeks ±
2.5 weeks. Thirty five percent of patients had stages I and II and 65%
had stages III and IV. The 5 patients without early response to ER died
within one year of therapy. Twenty six patients were lost to follow up
and the remaining 60 patients had a 50%, 5 year DFS. The 41 patients with
stage IIIB had five year DFS of 40%. Prior hysterectomy had no impact on
prognosis. No major complications were encountered. Conclusion:
ER alone for cervical cancer is a reasonable alternative to combination

Fertility outcome following surgical treatment of ectopic pregnancy The
objective of this study is to assess the influence of conservative vs radical
surgical treatment of EP on the postoperative reproductive performance.
The medical records of patients with EP treated between 1978 and 1992 were
reviewed. 67% of the remaining 116 patients underwent salpingectomy [group
A] and 33% underwent less radical procedures such as salpingostomy and
salpingotomy [group B]. Patients in group A were significantly older and
of higher parity and more advanced ectopic gestation compared to group
B. However, history of infertility and IUD use were similar in both groups.
Postoperative pregnancy rate was higher in group B (88%) vs group A (65%).
Repeat EP was higher in group B (11%) vs 4% in group A, but this difference
was not statistically significant. Salpingectomy, the traditional treatment
for tubal pregnancy, has resulted in a significant reduction in fertility
without a parallel decrease in the rate of recurrent ectopic gestation.
