RESEARCH PROJECTS
The effect of estrogen on pigment production by melanocytes A
possible role for sex hormones in the pathogenesis of melasma has been
suggested because of its frequent association with pregnancy and oral contraceptives.
Estrogenic hormones are thought to enhance melanogenesis, but the mechanisms
by which they interact with the melanin system are still unclear. The purpose
of this project is to study the effect of sex hormones on melanocyte cell
function, and more specifically, on the synthesis of melanin, and to determine
whether melanogenesis is stimulated through the activation of protein kinase

Epidemiology of skin cancer at the American University of Beirut Medical Center—data from the tumor registry The
objective of this project is to study the epidemiology of skin cancer reported
to the Tumor Registry at the American University of Beirut Medical Center
between 1982 till present. The demographic data will be analyzed and risk
factors defined in an attempt to determine trends and to draw preventive
strategies against skin cancer in the country. To the best of our knowledge,
this study has been done in the country in the early seventies and since
then, no data has been published on this topic. N.G., Rubeiz, S.M. Salman.
The impact of different topical agents on the healing of wounds status-post medium depth chemical peeling. The
study was designed to assess and compare the effects of pre and/or post-treatment
of pig’s skin wounds with one or combinations of tretinoin, glycolic acid,
estrogen, amonium lactate and vitamin C. Preliminary results demonstrated
that tretinoin, glycolic acid, estrogen, and vitamin C exert their effects
on non-photodamaged and hormonally extragenital non-aged skin of pigs.
Pre-treatment with these agents produced variable qualitative morphological
changes related to epithelialization, fibroplasia, elastic fiber and ground
substance formation. S.M., Salman, A.G. Kibbi. (Supported by MPP.)
