As will be seen in the following pages, the faculty of the American University of Beirut continues to make great strides in applied and theoretic research. The hallmark of a fine university is the organic link between research and teaching. It is not only a question of carrying out the research but of communicating its logic and its results to students of varying levels of sophistication. The University
is committed to improving the research infrastructure at the AUB through
greatly improved laboratory facilities, the expansion of library resources,
enhanced access to the internet, and a growing budget to support faculty
research projects. In this manner, we will build on the fine efforts, reflected
in these pages, made after a time of severe disruption and in the face
of daunting challenges. I salute my colleagues for what they were able
to accomplish.
