RESEARCH PROJECTS
Bekaa reproductive health study The
study is similar to the ‘Giza morbidity study’ and aims to investigate
the prevalence of gynecological conditions and their risk factors, as well
as to understand women’s perceptions of these morbidity conditions of health
and ill-health as related to reproduction. It will involve both a questionnaire
administered to women interviewed in their houses, and a gynecological
exam at a medical facility in the village, in addition to some laboratory
tests. It will also involve some in-depth case studies. The measurement
of women’s personal interpretation and experience of the course of the
illness will introduce a clearer understanding of women’s perspectives
of reproductive morbidity with new added dimensions not covered by the
Giza study. In addition, comparing these interpretations with the medical
outcomes, will be very helpful in complementing the knowledge provided
to this field by the Giza study. A sample of 500 women were interviewed
and had a physical and gynecological exam. M. Deeb, J. Awwad, and
H. Kaspar. (Supported by Mellon Foundation.)
Reproductive morbidity data base In
the context of strengthening of population laboratory database on reproductive
health, two surveys were launched in the summer of 1995 that addressed
gynecological morbidity: a clinic based study and a hospital based study.
These studies, together with the Beirut 1992-93 population-based survey
that included a section on gynecological health, are intended to provide
a more comprehensive picture of gynecological morbidity in Beirut in terms
of women’s perceptions of their symptoms, their health seeking behavior
and their medically diagnosed conditions. From an epidemiological view
point, these data enable us to identify the conditions that need to be
targeted in prevention programs, specifically through the hospital based
data, as well as the conditions that women need to be made aware of. By
combining the three data sets, we hope to get a clearer picture of the
conditions that need to be addressed at all preventive levels as well as
the group of women who need to be targeted. It also offers an indirect
avenue for analyzing medical procedures and pave the way for studying the
quality of reproductive health care. M. Deeb, F. Ghorayeb, T. Kabakian

Epidemiology of primary health problems and exposure in wartime: Beirut 1984-1994 The
current study population is based on two population household surveys that
were undertaken by the Faculty of Health Sciences, AUB in the city of Beirut
in 1983-84 and 1993-94. These two surveys provide a unique longitudinal
perspective in describing change over time in health issues. In each household
the respondent provided information on permanent residents of the household,
the survey cohort data covered 1,641 comprising a total of 6,327 individuals.
Morbidity information covered specific current ailments and chronic conditions
ever experiences by members of the household. The method that was used
was based on perceived morbidity reported by the respondent. A case-control
analysis will be conducted for each relevant risk factor as well as a logistic
regression analysis including all risk factors. M. Deeb, H. Armenian
and R. Khayat. (Supported by Ford Foundation.)
Incidence of cardiovascular disease and exposures in wartime: Beirut 1984-1994 This
research explores the relationship of war-events exposure to incidence
of cardiovascular diseases. M. Deeb and H. Armenian. (Supported
by Ford Foundation.)

The impact of traumatic injury related disability on families and state among adults in Lebanon and the Palestinian autonomous state This
project is a multi-disciplinary study conducted in collaboration with researchers
from England, France and Palestine. The study involves three phases: screening
for disability in the community, assessment of causes and impairments associated
with the different types of disability, and finally psychological morbidity
associated with war-related injuries and exposures. Field work and preliminary
analysis of the data have already been accomplished. Secondary analysis
and write-up of the final report is currently underway. A. Sibai, K.

Behavioral risk factors among secondary schools in Lebanon Prevalence
and correlates of behavioral risk factors, including intentional and unintentional
injuries, drug use, and dietary habits, were determined in a sample of
students attending secondary schools in Lebanon in 1997. Data analysis
and final report submitted to WHO/UNICEF are already accomplished. We are
currently, in the process of secondary analysis for write-up of publishable
papers. A. Sibai, N. Kanaan. (Supported by WHO/UNICEF.)
Living arrangements among the elderly in Lebanon: a proposal for planning and intervention This research includes secondary analysis of the 'Population and Housing Survey' conducted by the Ministry of Social Affairs in Lebanon in 1996. The project is in the analysis phase. A.
