National water research unit The work completed relates to the following major research
activities: Follow-up Environmental Surveillance 1996; the project aimed
at developing a comprehensive database on the quality of potable water
in Lebanon. In addition, the developed potable water quality control program
was evaluated for sustainability. Surface water quality determination for
multi-purpose utilization; the study aimed at monitoring major water body
in Lebanon to assess quality, self purification capacity and potential
multi-purpose utilization for agricultural, industrial and recreational
activities. M. Jurdi, K. Zouhairy, S. Korfali, K. Kheir. (Supported

Blood lead level and iron-deficiency among children presenting to the AUB Medical Center The proposed study aims at concurrently exploring the problems
of lead poisoning and iron-deficiency among young children presenting to
the AUB Medical Center. It is hypothesized that lead poisoning and iron-deficiency
are prevalent but under-diagnosed among children living in Lebanon. A total
of 310 well babies and children, aged 1 to 3 years, were recruited from
the pediatrics services of the outpatient department (OPD) and the private
clinics of the American University Medical Center. The mothers of the babies
and children were interviewed to inquire about the family’s demographic
that could be related to lead poisoning or iron-deficiency, to identify
potential sources of exposure to lead, to assess dietary habits, and to
measure the prevalence of hyperkinetic behavior. In addition, blood samples,
drawn by trained technicians, were analyzed for lead level, iron level,
and hematocrit. S. Mouwakit, I. Nuwayhid, M. Mikati, M. Ariss, M. Nabulsi,

The application of a battery of neurobehavioral tests on a sample of children and adults in Lebanon: a pilot study The objectives of the research project are : 1) To assess
the applicability of a set of neurobehavioral tests on adults and children
in Lebanon. 2) To identify resources who, if needed, could translate subsets
of these tests into classical and colloquial Arabic. 3) To assess the logistics
of performing such tests and identify the need for further professional
training and required space and time in future studies. 4) To identify
potential resource people, especially in neuropsychology, who are interested
in administrating these tests in future studies. 5) To establish a core
multidisciplinary team who could perform neuro-toxicology research studies.
6) To establish contacts with international and regional experts who could
later function as potential collaborators or consultants. I. Nuwayhid.
