A calibrated noise impact assessment model for highway traffic in Lebanon

Lebanon has embarked on an ambitious program of highway building and upgrading. A key element of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of highway construction is the noise impact. A unique situation arises due to the proposed building of a new elevated “Northern Highway” between the existing coastal highway and the existing coastal structures. At certain locations, the proposed new highway is only 3 m away from existing structures. Thus, these coastal structures will be subjected to aggregate noise levels due to both existing and future highways. This situation warrants the development of a noise prediction model for aggregate highway traffic and the demonstration of it through application to the unique situation in Lebanon. In addition, the study will identify the state-of-the-art noise reduction measures and technologies. M.H.Baaj and M. El-Fadel (Supported by URB.)

Effect of casting position on bond of reinforcement in eccentric pullout of silica fume concrete specimens

The objectives of the study were to investigate the role of casting position, specimen type and specimen size on the effect of silica fume on bond strength of reinforcing bars, and to evaluate the effect of bar size and concrete confinement on the anchorage characteristics of the reinforcing bars in silica fume concrete. Forty-eight eccentric pullout (305x305x254 mm) specimens were cast. The variables were the percentage replacement by weight of cement by silica fume, the concrete cover over the reinforcing bar, and the bar size. The anchored bars were bottom cast as compared to similar specimens tested before at AUB where the bars were top cast. Testing will be conducted in the near future. Evaluation of the test results will be done during the summer of 1999. B. Hamad (Supported by URB.)

Tactical planning of transit routes: operator class and market arrangement considerations

This research project is developing a framework for modeling the frequency setting problem in mass transit routes, considering multiple vehicle and operator classes, and different transit market arrangements. The aim is to relax the simplifying assumptions imposed by previous formulations by developing generalized tactical planning models capable of handling simultaneously the issues of multiple vehicle and operator classes, as well as being capable of considering, comparing, and contrasting different transit market arrangements. During the first year of this project, the research developed a number of case studies to determine and assess the optimal frequencies that would be provided by operators in different service categories, under each of four alternative transit market arrangements. The case studies clarified critical service considerations in this generalized context, illustrating the potential of the proposed modeling approach as a policy analysis tool. July 1998-June 1999. I. Kaysi. (Supported by URB.)

Self-organization and traffic network performance under extreme uncontrolled conditions: postwar Beirut

This research project investigated the quality of traffic service under mostly uncontrolled conditions. A framework for analysis is provided by the urban road network in the city of Beirut in the period after 17 years of war. A useful tool to characterize traffic at the network level is the two-fluid model; the two fluids consist of moving and stopped vehicles as a result of traffic conditions, and their interaction is observed to produce several parameters contributing to the scope of this research. This model also makes it possible to perform a sensitivity analysis whose objective is to evaluate the impact of introducing several control measures in a context characterized by lack of control. The study indicated that implementation of traffic control measures in situations characterized by lack of control will yield lower delays primarily at higher levels of traffic concentration. July 1996-June 1998. I. Kaysi. (Supported by URB.)

Driver behavior modeling in MITSIM: review and recommended improvements

The research focused on the MITSIM traffic simulator, developed at MIT and whose primary objective is to simulate integrated traffic networks supported by advanced traffic control and surveillance systems. The simulator is designed to establish a laboratory environment for testing and evaluating designs of Advanced Traffic Management Systems and Advanced Traveler Information Systems. The conducted research developed along three thrusts: (i) Providing a review of driver behavior models in the existing implementation of MITSIM and prioritizing enhancements to the behavioral models. (ii) Development of specific “measures of performance” to be adopted in validation exercises, enabling a more refined identification of MITSIM module performance. (iii) Identification of “calibration” exercises which may be conducted to establish MITSIM parameters consistent with Boston traffic data. 1997. I. Kaysi and M. Ben-Akiva*
