The metallurgy of the Roman silver coinage

This long-term project of analyses, initiated in 1994, uses Atomic Absorption Spectophotometry to determine the metallurgical makeup of Roman silver coinage. The purpose of the analyses is to provide a picture of imperial manipulation of precious metal coinage and fiscal policies, as well as using trace element analysis to suggest likely places of production. A series of articles by the researchers have already appeared in print, and further ones are being prepared. K. Butcher and M.J. Pointing*.

Tyre and its hinterland archaeological survey

The site of Shwakir lies to the south of the modern city of Tyre, between the Tyre rest house and Tell er-Rachidiye. This area of over 1.5 million square meters has yielded evidence of late Roman and early Islamic settlement. A season of field-walking in 1998 yielded evidence of metalworking, the remains of a bath building, monumental Roman masonry and sarcophagi, and large quantities of early Islamic pottery, as well as Roman building material (including high-status marble wall cladding). Future work will entail geophysical survey and limited excavation of key features to determine the nature and extent of settlement. We will also be working with environmental groups to establish the site as a nature reserve. K. Butcher and R. Thorpe.

Political practice in fifteenth century Mecca

The project examines a variety of historical sources from fifteenth-century Mecca in order to collect data on the political practice and ideology of the sharifs of Mecca. Traditional historiography has relied on contemporary Mamluk sources that reflect the ideological aspirations of the Mamluk sultans by asserting the efficacy of their sovereignty over the city of Mecca. The project builds on previous research on the economic and political history of Mecca that indicates that the sharifs regarded themselves as the autonomous rulers of the Hijaz in an effort to enable a comparative analysis of the political practice in the medieval Middle East (initial exploratory stage). J. Meloy. (Supported by URB.)

Beirut—ancient ceramics and socio-economic change

Research objectives: Settlement formation processes; construction of complete ceramic type-series based on the material from stratified deposits; investigation of environmental information. Electronic data recording (involving CAD & GIS applications) enables the establishment of a database platform that will facilitate the analysis of the otherwise unwieldy mass of data. The detailed study of the stratigraphy, artefacts and ecofacts is at an advanced stage. Partial results already indicate that this project will provide an unprecedented and comprehensive understanding of the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic period development of this part of the eastern Mediterranean (a continuation of the AUB-Leverhulme Souks Excavation Project I). H. Seeden, D. Perring*, T. Williams*, S., Jennings*, B. Alvey*, K. Butcher, P. Reynolds, R. Thorpe, J. Abdallah, S. Kouly, R. Mikati. (Supported by the British Leverhulme Trust grant 1998-2001.)

Arabs and Turks: contemporary Arab perceptions

This is a book-length study that deals with the birth of Arab nationalism in Syria and the role played therein by contemporary Arab perceptions of the Young Turk movement in terms of its ideology and political practice. The Arab press of the period will constitute the principal source of evidence even though other archival material will be taken into consideration. S. Seikaly.

Transcending religious strife: nafir suriyya as medium and message

An on-going in depth study of the pioneering role played by the nascent press of Syria in overcoming endemic religious strife. The project entails an investigation of the press as a medium capable by its nature and message to communicate across lines of the religious divide in favor of a pluralistic existence in which tolerance prevails. Butros al-Boustani's Nafir Suriyya will be taken as a case study. S. Seikaly.
