RESEARCH PROJECTS

Clinical trial of Fluconazole in the treatment of onychomycosis

This is an ongoing clinical trial of orally administered Fluconazole in the treatment of patients with onychomycosis. So far eleven patients have completed the treatment. The results compare well with other oral antifungals. However, this trial specifically excludes patients with severe onychomycosis. M. Matta. (Supported by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals.)

The effect of estrogen on pigment production by melanocytes

A possible role for sex hormones in the pathogenesis of melasma has been suggested because of its frequent association with pregnancy and oral contraceptives. Estrogenic hormones are thought to enhance melanogenesis, but the mechanisms by which they interact with the melanin system are still unclear. The purpose of this project is to study the effect of sex hormones on melanocyte cell function and more specifically on the synthesis of melanin, and to determine whether melanogenesis is stimulated through the activation of protein kinase C. N. Rubeiz, A-G. Kibbi and S. Zaynoun. (Supported by URB.)

The impact of different pre-treatment regimens on chemical peeling

The aim of this project is to look into the effects of various topical agents on a medium depth peel. The topical agents to be studied are: retinoic acid 0.1% cream, ammonium lactate 12%, azaleic acid 20% cream, glycolic acid 15% gel, hydroquinone 4% cream, and hydrocortisone 1% cream. They will be used in various combinations before and after the peel. The peeling agents that will be used are trichloroacetic acid 35% and Jessner’s solution. The potential results that may be arrived at in this study may help better understanding of the impact of different topical agents (pre- and post-peel) on chemexfoliation. That would allow better preparation of the skin to be peeled in order to shorten the post-peel morbidity, augment the cosmetic outcome and minimise potential risks among which is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. S. Salman and A-G. Kibbi. (Supported by AUB Medical Practice Plan.)
