Levels and changes in fertility in Beirut: a study based on the analyses of birth intervals and birth order statistics In
Greater Beirut, the civil war has had numerous demographic consequences
which might have accelerated the normal course of the already well-advanced
demographic transition going on in its population. The fertility studies
undertaken earlier for Beirut and its suburbs in 1970 and for Beirut city
in the mid-1980s were based on conventional measures of fertility such
as the crude birth rate (CBR), general fertility rate (GFR), age-specific
fertility rates (ASFRs) and total fertility rate (TFR). Of late, it has
been realized by demographers that these conventional measures are poor
indicators of fertility for a population (as that of Beirut) undergoing
rapid fertility transition. For these reasons, the present study investigated
the levels and changes in fertility in Beirut by using the information
on birth intervals and birth order statistics collected in the study entitled
‘Beirut 1984’ and in its follow-up study in 1992. The greatest advantage
in using these methods is that they do not require denominator data and
yield fairly reliable estimates of fertility and changes therein, in populations
undergoing rapid fertility transition. Cohort and instantaneous parity
progression ratios have been computed. The results of this study show that
a drastic decline in fertility had taken place in Beirut during the period
of civil war. P. Saxena and M. Deeb. (Supported by URB.)
