The Ottoman register of churches in the Arab provinces

The translation into Arabic of Ottoman documents selected from the Ottoman Register of Churches (Kelise Defterleri) is now complete and ready for publication by the Royal Institute for Interfaith Studies, Amman. The translation will be preceded by a general introduction on the nature of translated documents and their historical significance. A. Abu-Husayn.

The unknown career of Ahmad Ma‘n (1667-1697)

The manuscript is being considered for publication by the periodical Archivum Ottomanicum. A. Abu-Husayn.

Coinage in Roman Syria: Northern Syria, 64 bc-ad 253

This is a study aimed at establishing a definitive account of coins circulating in Roman Syria. The study will result in a book due to be published by the Royal Numismatic Society of Great Britain. K. Butcher.

Surat al-Rum: A study of the exegetical literature

This is a study which intends to analyse the exegetical texts pertaining to the opening verses of surat al-rum and attempts to establish a reader reaction to the Qur’an. N. El-Cheikh.

Archaeological and topographical survey of Teel-Burak

A survey of the site will be undertaken with a view to mapping all ancient and modern features on and around the ancient settlement prior to excavation. A historical study of the site has already been published by the project leader. H. Sader (Supported by the German Archaeological Institute; Melton Foundation.)

Settlement pattern and land occupation of the territory of Baalbek based on remote-sensing techniques

Remote-sensing investigation based on satellite and aerial photography of the Baalbek area. The identification and mapping of archaeological features is aimed at protecting them from urban infrastructure and agricultural works. H. Sader and H. Salame-Sarkis. (Supported by UNESCO; UNSCR.)

Baalbek: The image and the monument

A monograph which will be published to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of Kaiser William II’s visit to Baalbek. Part of the monograph deals with the archaeology and history of the site from pre-Hellenistic to the medieval period. H. Sader, A. Neuwirth* and T. Scheffler*. The archaeological study of urban formation process in downtown Beirut: excavation of the Souk area, 1994-1996

The project for the urban excavation of downtown Beirut has been completed and has yielded substantial information about the urban formation and development of Beirut from the Hellenistic to the Ottoman period. Post-excavation analysis for scientific publication and presentation to the public is in progress and is expected to continue for a minimum of two years. S. Seeden, D. Perring* and T. Williams*. Christian Contributions to the nahda in Palestine

A study which aims to trace the role played by Christian thinkers in the intellectual and literary revival in Palestine in the years preceding World War I. The study will be presented at a conference and is due to be published. S. Seikaly.

Early Arab nationalism: towards a secular discourse

A content anaysis of early Arab nationalist discourse which intends to identify the first formulation of secular views and their incoporation into that nascent ideology. The principal source for the study is the periodical literature of the period preceding World War I. S. Seikaly.
