EUROMESCO Conference in London

On September 14 and 15, 2005, EuroMeSCo (the Euro-Mediterranean Study Commission) organized a high-level conference for its Senior Officials entitled “Justice and Terrorism in the Euro-Med Region”. The conference was hosted by the British government as President of the European Union [last half of 2005] and held at the prestigious Chatham House in London (the Royal Institute for International Affairs). The guest speakers included high-ranking government officials and prominent researchers from Europe and the Mediterranean countries.

The Anna Lindh Foundation opened the opportunity to 10 junior researchers from the Euro-Med region to attend this conference. A total of 70 people applied for the 10 spots. Each applicant had to prepare a one-page critical assessment of the Barcelona Process, and finally 5 people were chosen from each side of the Mediterranean based on the quality of their research and writing.

Randy Nahle (Junior-year AUB Political Studies major) was the winning applicant from Lebanon and was invited by the Anna Lindh Foundation to spend four days in London to participate in the conference.

A special private session was held on the sidelines of the conference in which the 10 junior researchers presented to a group of EuroMeSCo officials their views on the Barcelona Process in its tenth anniversary and their suggestions on how it could be enhanced. The EuroMeSCo was greatly impressed by the contributions of the junior participants. The session was televised on Al-Arabiyya.
