The following research
departments and interdepartmental programs fall under the jurisdiction
of the Office of the Provost and are headed by the provost. As a result,
its directors report directly to the provost.
- Center for Advanced Mathematical Sciences
(CAMS)
Established in 1999
through the efforts of an international group of scientists with the
primary goal of becoming the premier center of excellence for research
in mathematical sciences in the Middle East, the Center for Advanced
Mathematical Sciences (CAMS) provides a means for promoting research and
graduate studies in the mathematical sciences, as well as a focal point
for collaborative research among scientists and mathematicians in
Lebanon and abroad. CAMS’current director is Professor
Wafic Sabra.
Initiative for Biodiversity Studies in
Arid Regions (IBSAR)
Established in 2002 to
promote nature conservation, IBSAR engages in research, training, and
information exchange to promote the conservation of biodiversity in arid
regions, and to explore and develop linkages and opportunities between
biodiversity and society. IBSAR is currently Directed by Professor
Salma Talhouk.
- Interfaculty Graduate Environmental
Sciences Program (IGESP)
The Interfaculty
Graduate Environmental Sciences Program (IGESP) leads to the degree of
Master of Science in environmental sciences with four specializations
depending on the faculty to which the student applies. The specialties
are
- Office of Institutional Research and
Assessment (OIRA)
The Office of
Institutional Research and Assessment helps coordinate institutional
assessment and research activities, and is responsible for the
collection, analysis, and dissemination of information about the
University’s environment and performance. Also, the OIRA develops and
conducts assessments for various purposes at institutional, regional,
and international levels. OIRA is currently directed by Professor
Karma El Hassan.
- Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy
and International Affairs (IFI)
The Issam Fares
Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs is a separate
institute within AUB whose current work is integrated within AUB’s
faculties, and will eventually be extended beyond the University.
The Institute aims to
bring the power of knowledge, research, and critical thinking to inform
and enrich debates on public policy and international affairs, and to
promote good governance in the various fields of public policy and
international affairs in keeping with the best interests of the people
of Lebanon and the Arab world.
Rami Khouri is currently the director of the institute.
- University Research Board (URB)
The University Research
Board, one of the University Senate committees, formulates policies and
guidelines for the allocation of funds for research and faculty
development. It considers policies to be followed in seeking grant
support from external agencies, and acts in an advisory capacity to the
Provost in the implementation of policies pertaining to allocation of
those grants.
