Energy Do's and Don'ts At The Office
Do's
Metabolism: We are not all equal when it comes to how our body
respond to the environment around us; dress appropriately to take the
chill or access heat off.
Thermostats: Set temperatures to 76 °F and 86 °F during
summer occupied and unoccupied periods, respectively, and 70 °F and
60 °F during winter occupied and unoccupied periods, respectively
Doors & Windows: Keep outside doors and windows closed to maintain
proper indoor design temperature conditions. Open doors and windows to
take advantage of outdoor weather conditions only after
the cooling/heating systems in the space have been switched off.
Lights & Office Equipment: Turn lights and equipment off when
not in use.
Last Out, Lights Off: The last one out should turn lights off to
common spaces; laboratories, lecture rooms, meeting rooms, conference
rooms, corridors, etc.
Open & Close Shades: In the winter, open window shades to increase
heat gain through the windows and reverse that in the summer to keep the
heat out.
Equipment: Keep fume hood sash closed and turn off lab equipment
when not in use.
Double Side It: When copying or printing try to use the double
sided feature; you save energy and trees. Also encourage the use of black
and white versus color; you save a lot of money on printer/copier cartridges.
Do not forget to recycle paper, and use inter-office envelops.
E-Mail It: If possible send an e-mail versus a hard copy.
Water: Conserve water and report leaky faucets and running toilets
to PPD Help Desk at Ext. 2015.
Call For Help: Report any abnormal building and equipment conditions
to PPD Help Desk at Ext. 2015.
Don'ts
Do not temper with thermostats.
Fans & Space Heaters: Allowed only in emergency.
