Yearly Schedules

First Year Categorical Residents
Each resident is supposed to rotate in the following sections of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine:
- Inpatient Ward at the Makassed General Hospital (MGH) for one month
- Inpatient Ward at the Beirut Governmental University Hospital (BGUH) for one month
- St Jude Hematology/Oncology Ward for one month
- Emergency Department (ED) for one month
- Outpatient Department (OPD) for one month
- Adolescent Medicine for one or two months
- Developmental Behavioral Clinic for one month
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for one month
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for one month
- Term Newborn (TNB) experience for one month
- Vacation for four weeks

First Year Preliminary Residents
Each resident is supposed to rotate in the following sections of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine:
- NICU for two or three months
- PICU for two or three months
- St Jude Oncology Ward for one or two months
- BGUH for two or three months
- ED for one or two months
- Elective for one month without duties
- Vacation for four weeks

Second-Year Residents
Each resident is supposed to rotate in the following
sections of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine:
- Inpatient Ward for two months
- St Jude Ward for one month for five residents only
- ED for three or four months
- OPD for one month
- NICU for one or two months
- PICU for one month
- Elective with duties for one month
- Vacation for four weeks

Third-Year Residents
Each resident is supposed to rotate in the following
sections of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine:
- Inpatient Ward for two months
- St Jude Ward for one or two months
- ED for two months
- OPD for one month
- Adolescent Clinic for one month for three residents only
- NICU for two months
- Elective with duties for one month
- Elective without duties for 1 month
- Vacation for four weeks

Fourth-Year Residents
Each resident is supposed to rotate in the following
sections of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine:
- PICU for five months
- ED for three months
- NICU for two months
- Adolescent Medicine for one month
- Vacation for four weeks
Duty Schedules
The duties'
schedule in the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine works according to the
ACGME policies.
The working hours per week are approximately 80, counted on an average of four weeks.
The duties are at a minimum of every third night with the
resident leaving at 1:00 pm after being oncall for 24 hours.

Night Call Schedule for the First-Year Residents (PGY1)
- The ED duties for first-year residents are 12-hour shifts (day,
day / night, night / off, off). The ED team can call for help from the floor team, if need be. The team is supposed to call the NICU or PICU teams in
case an admission for these units is in ED.
- The floor duties
are covered by medical students as first call; no night
calls on this unit are assigned to first-year residents.

The PICU duties are every third night. The two PGY1's from the
rotation will share the duties with the PGY1 in either the floor
or the OPD. The post-call PGY1 will cover the St Jude Outpatient
Clinic for half a day (till 1:00 pm); the third PGY1 will be off
duty.
- The NICU duties will be every fourth night. The two PGY1's from the
NICU rotation will share the duty with the PGY1 from the TNB
rotation, as well as a PGY1 either from the floor or the OPD. The post-call PL1 will leave at 1:00 pm after signing out to the team.
- The Children's Cancer Center of Lebanon (CCCL) Oncology Ward duty schedule will be every third night, where the two PGY1's rotating on this unit will share the duties
with a PGY1 from the floor or the OPD. The post-call PGY1 will sign out her/his patients to the team at 10:00 am.

Night Call Schedule for the Second-Year Residents (PGY2)
The night call for the PGY2 covers the Pediatric Ward (6 South (6S), 6 North (6N) and Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)), NICU, PICU, St Jude and ED as backup.
The night call frequency is every fourth night as an average. The
resident post-call will sign out the care of her/his patient to the
team at 1:00 pm after the 24-hour work.
- When the PICU resident is post-call, the same level resident from the ward will cover PICU, along with her/his unit.
- When the NICU resident is post-call, the same level resident from the ward will cover NICU. If the senior resident of the ward judges it needed, s/he will seek the help from the PICU PGY2.
- When the ward resident is post-call, the PICU resident will cover the ward, along with her/his unit.
- When the OPD resident is post-call, the other Outpatient Clinic resident will cover her/his clinics.
The residents are allowed to cancel their Continuity Clinic when
they are post-call, provided that this does not occur more than
once per month.

Night Call Schedule for the Third and Fourth-Year Residents (PGY3 and PGY4)
The night call for the PGY3 and PGY4 covers the Pediatric Ward
(6S, 6N and EMU), NICU, PICU, St Jude and ED as backup.
The night call frequency is every third night as an average. The
resident post-call will sign out the care of her/his patient to the
team at 1:00 pm after the 24-hour work.
The NICU resident will not have calls during the week days. They
will have duties on Friday as 24-hour call, Sunday from 7:00 am
till 5:00 pm on one week and on Saturday on the next week.
When the ward resident is post-call, the ward junior resident
will cover the unit. The resident can seek help from the PICU
resident, if needed. When the OPD resident is post-call, the other Outpatient Clinic
resident will cover her/his clinics.
The residents are allowed to cancel their Continuity Clinic when
they are post-call, provided that this does not occur more than
once per month.
