The Department of Otolaryngology - Head and
Neck Surgery at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) offers clinical clerkships to undergraduate
students and specialty electives to interns and residents. It
also offers clinical, postgraduate resident training to MD
graduates.
The internship program is usually one year of straight surgery.
The residency training program consists of four years. Although
strong emphasis is put on clinical training, residents are given
the opportunity to have a period of basic research. Residents
are expected to have published at least one paper before
graduating from the program. Inservice exams (oral/written) are
given on a yearly basis. A period of two months for an elective
is given for the PGY4 year to be spent in approved US programs.
Residents are supervised in the clinics, operating room, laboratory sessions, and instruction courses. Didactic sessions are an essential part of their education and include:
- grand rounds
- chapter reviews
- journal club
tumor board
- interesting case presentations
- mortality and morbidity
- attending presentations
- didactic specialty lectures
- visiting lecturers
- pathology conferences
- radiology conferences
- multidisciplinary maxillofacial conferences
- temporal bone dissection course
Residents progress in their clinical responsibilities throughout their years of training.
