CHIEF'S MESSAGE

Suhail Bulos, MD, FRCS (E), FACS The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at AUBMC has one of the oldest orthopaedic training programs in the Middle East. In fact, orthopaedic surgery in Lebanon and the Middle East started at AUBMC in 1952 upon the return of our senior, Dr. Afif Nsouly, from his training in the United States.

The division includes nine surgeons who have introduced new techniques and modern concepts of orthopaedic surgery to the Middle East, such as total joint replacement in 1968, scoliosis and spine surgery instrumentation in 1975, hand surgery, bone and joint oncologic surgery and the correction of deformities. The division was the pioneer of arthroplasty surgery in the area in the late sixties. Since then, it has continued to provide state-of-the-art services in a variety of fields, if not all, such as limb reconstruction surgery, the correction of traumatic and congenital deformities, to cite only a few.

Moreover, there is a strong, ongoing program of limb salvage surgery for malignant tumors of the lower and upper extremities.

Our physicians work in an integrated and cooperative network that strives to provide the highest quality and cost-effective care for more than 6,000 patients annually. The vast resources of the Medical Center, which include specialized imaging studies, advanced anesthesia, an upgraded Physical Therapy Department, and the broad array of consulting services, are utilized for the welfare of our orthopaedic patients.

The mission of the division is to offer, on the one hand, the best, well-rounded, dedicated, caring services to our patient, and, on another, the best, individualized teaching to our residents and students during their stay in the division and also to help them secure placement for further specialized training abroad.

These goals are achieved by:

  • Serving as a strong advocate for quality healthcare for our patients in Lebanon and the Middle East.
  • Maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice.
  • Acheiving the highest degree of patient satisfaction.
  • Stressing the importance of continuing education for physicians to ensure that they are always on the cutting edge of orthopaedic technology.
  • Promoting patient education to ensure patient understanding and informed participation in their medical care.
Excellence is our aim.
