"Mathematics as an expression of the human mind reflects the active will, the contemplative reason, and the desire for aesthetic perfection. Its basic elements are logic and intuition, analysis and construction, generality and individuality.. the interplay of these antithetic forces and the struggle for their synthesis constitutes the life, usefulness, and supreme value of mathematical science." Courant and Hilbert.

If these words speak to you, then you may be ready to spend one, two, three or five years with us in The Department of Mathematics, where you may pursue studies leading to a degree in Mathematics combined with Art, or to a degree in Mathematics combined with Science; or you may use Mathematics as a gate-way to another educational pursuit. Whichever choice you make, you can be sure that you will be taken care of, by experts, who will do their best to impart to you an understanding of mathematics as an organic whole and as a basis for scientific thinking and acting.

Through lectures, assignments, and projects, you will experience the exhilarating feeling of learning, discovery, and beauty that only great disciplines can impart. You will learn about unity, balance, harmony, generalization, and specialization, local versus global, symmetry, analysis, and synthesis. You will also learn how intuition is motivated and directed in Mathematics in order to lead to crystallized deductive form.

Learning takes place not only in the classroom, but also outside. Through discussions with your fellow students, with your professors during office hours or otherwise, or with other students in the student organization, "The Circle", you will learn a whole lot about mathematics, and about yourself. Your life at the University will be, hopefully, not one of study only, but also of thought and reflection, friendship and deep decisions.

The Faculty and staff in the Mathematics Department extend you a hearty welcome. Through teaching, learning, working and playing we look forward to celebrate together the great discipline of Mathematics.
