Libraries Participate in AMICAL II
Two managers from Jafet Library participated in the second AMICAL conference
which was held at the Lebanese American University, June 1-3, 2005. Samira
Rafidi Meghdessian, the Information Services Librarian presented a talk
on June 1st, titled "Information Literacy and Academic Environments".
Several workshops were held to discuss specific issues of collaboration
between the American-style colleges and universities. Prominent among
them were Resource-Sharing, Professional Development and Information Literacy.
Fatme Charafeddine, the Serials Librarian, took part in the Resource Sharing
session and S.R. Meghdessian attended the Information Literacy session.
Among those invited to do presentations and to moderate panels were representatives
from academic computing centers of colleges in the U.S. such as Wheaton
College and the College of New Rochelle.
All the conference participants toured Jafet Library in the afternoon
of June 2nd, and then joined the library managers to a reception held
in front of Jafet Library.


Highlights of Honorary Degree Reciprients
Biographies, photos, achievements and awards of the 2004-05 Honorary Degree
Recipients are on view in the Exhibition Gallery of Jafet Library. The
honorees are (from left to right): Fairuz (singer), The Aga Khan (spiritual
leader, philanthrophist), Richard Debs (banker, philanthropist), Ghassan
Tueini (journalist), and Ahmed Zewail (chemist).
The Second Mellon Seminar
AUB faculty members participated in a 6-week summer seminar on campus
funded by the Mellon Foundation.

The American Literature Collection
Fund
Mrs. Hana Debs Akkari donated $50,000 to the University Libraries, to
develop a collection in American Literature, in memory of her late father,
Mr. Abdul-Hadi Debs.
Dr. Sirene Harb, faculty member in the English Department, in coordination
with Hala Sayegh, the Collection Development Librarian, is working to
enhance the existing collection. They will also benchmark with other universities
consider the latest trends in American literature.
New staff member in Special Collections
and Archives
Iman Abdallah joined the Archives and Special Collections Department as
a Library Assistant for Archives, as of May 2005.
