Check guidelines for Arabic Materials

LIBCAT is the University Libraries Online Catalog. It allows users to access the bibliographic information of the holdings of the University libraries: Jafet, Engineering & Architecture, and Science & Agriculture. LIBCAT does not provide access to articles of journals and magazines owned by the library (except for three AUB serial publications Berytus, al-Abhath, and Middle East Economic Papers). LIBCAT is accessible from the AUB homepage/University Libraries, or directly at: http://olib.aub.edu.lb/cgi-bin/jl_w207.sh. The catalog can be searched by using one of the search options listed below.

 


 

How to save your searches
    1. go to Account Details under My Acocunt
    2. follow the login steps
    3. perform your search
    4. click on Save Search, you will be prompted to enter a title for your search
To retrieve your saved searches:
    1. click on Saved Search under My Account
    2. follow the login steps
    3. you will get a list of all your saved searches
    4. click on the desired item
DO NOT FORGET TO LOG-OUT after you are done.

Title/Name Search
used to find items when you know the title or subtitle and/or the author:
    1. Enter the complete title, or just the first few words in the Title box (regardless of articles and prepositions), i.e. History of the Arabs or History Arabs, you will get the same results.
    2. To limit (Filter) your search:
      • Enter the Subtitle if known.
      • In the Author or Corporate name (organization, company or group as well as a name of meeting) box enter surname or the corporate name, i.e. Hitti,
      • In the First name box, enter the first name, i.e. Philip if you know it.
    3. Click on the Search Now button.
    4. The hitlist (list of search results) shows the items, which have matched your search.
    5. Click on the title hyperlink to view the bibliographic information. For Arabic display see Arabic Materials below.

Note: If you are looking for a title but you are not sure about the beginning words, you can start your search with a truncation sign (%), then space, then the word in question; i.e. search for a title with the word "Management" in the middle of the title: % management.


Keyword search
used to find titles where specific details are not known. The keyword index includes words from the title, subtitle, subject, series, names and abstract fields:
    1. Enter the keywords you want to find in the Keyword box separated by a Boolean operator (and, or, not), i.e. management and theory.
    2. Un-check any of the options that do not apply; i.e. Excat phrase, and/or all exact or similar words.
    3. Click on the Search Now button.
    4. The hitlist (list of search results) shows all the titles which have the word "management" and all the titles which have the word “theory” but not records with either word in. If you want to retrieve exact phrase you have to put your phrase between quotes, i.e. "management theory".
    5. For nested Boolean operators you can use the parentheses to specify or to narrow your search i.e. (management and theory) or (administration and theory).
    6. Click on the title to view the bibliographic information.
Boolean Operators
    1. Available only in the Keyword search option.
    2. You can combine keywords with the Boolean operators and, or, and not to modify or to add limits to your search.
    3. and i.e. Lebanon and economy: retrieves titles containing both Lebanon and economy.
    4. or i.e. Lebanon or Kuwait: retrieves titles about either Lebanon or Kuwait.
    5. not i.e. Arab countries not Lebanon: retrieves titles about Arab countries excluding Lebanon.
    6. The operators are not case sensitive.
Name only Search
used to find names of authors used in the catalog. The author can be a personal author or corporate author (organization, company or group as well as a name of meeting).
    1. Enter the Last name or the corporate name, in the “Author or Corporate Name” box, i.e. Hitti
    2. Enter the First Name if you know it.
    3. Click on the Search Now button.
    4. Click on Name then All Titles to retrieve the titles listed under the name specified.
    5. Click on the title to view the bibliographic information.

Note: If you are not sure about the spelling of a name, you can use the truncation sign (%); i.e. searching for Amin Maalouf (Maalouf, Maaluf, Ma'luf, etc.), you can use the (%) as: Ma%l%f, then you will get all spelling variations of that name.

Subject Search
used to find titles which have been linked to the subject you are searching under, or to retrieve a list of subject headings for browsing the subject headings authority list:
    1. Enter the subject you want to find in the Subject box, i.e. Management.
    2. If you want to retrieve a list of subject headings, tick the box and this will retrieve all the matching subject headings, allowing you to browse through the authority list.
    3. Click on the Search Now button.
    4. Click on the Title you need to retrieve from the hitlist or click the Subject you need to retrieve from a subject headings list, then Show titles to view the titles related to a specific subject.
    5. Click on the title to display the bibliographic information.

Note: If you are looking for a subject but you are not sure about the beginning words, you can start your search with a truncation sign (%), then space, then the subject in question; i.e. search for a subject with the word "Lebanon" in the middle of the title: % lebanon


Classmark Search
used to find titles which have been assigned a particular classmark, click for a detailed listing of the Dewey Decimal Classification:
    1. Enter the first part of the classmark in the Classmark box, e.g. 330 will retrieve titles about Economics and its subdivisions.
    2. Click on the Search Now button.
    3. A list of titles having classmark starting with 330 will be retrieved.
    4. Click on the title to view the bibliographic information.

ISBN/ISSN Search
used to find titles which have been assigned a particular ISBN, ISSN or barcode:
    1. Enter the barcode or (ISBN for books, or ISSN for journals) you want to find in the Barcode box. Do not include hyphens, i.e. 157387003X.
    2. Click on the Search Now button.
    3. The title having the barcode allocated is retrieved.
    4. Click on the title to view bibliographic information.

Series Search
used to find titles which are part of a series of publications:
    1. Enter the title of the series you want to find in the Title of Series box, i.e. Penguin books.
    2. Click on the Search Now button.
    3. A list of titles having Penguin books as a series is retrieved.
    4. Click on the Title to view the bibliographic information.

Publisher Search
used to find titles under a specific publisher:
    1. Enter the name of the publisher you want to find in the Name of Publisher box, i.e. Oxford University Press.
    2. Click on the Search Now button.
    3. A list of titles under Oxford University Press is retrieved.
    4. Click on the Title to view the bibliographic information.

My Account

This section provides user specific information. User is prompted to enter his/her barcode and password (OLIB barcode/password) in order to use any of the options listed below. For privacy reasons, users are advised to sign out after using the My Account section by clicking on the Sign Out button:


Submit Enquiry

allows user to submit research questions and view the responses online:
    1. Click on the Submit Enquiry and sign-in using your barcode/password.
    2. Enter the Subject of your research question.
    3. Enter the : as much as your are specific and detailed in describing your enquiry, the response will be accurate.
    4. Enter the To Be Completed By Date: this is the deadline of your enquiry. After this date, the response will be obsolete.
    5. The response of each enquiry will be sent to you via LIBCAT, under Account Details.
    6. Remember to when you are done checking any of the My Account options.

Account Details
allows each user to access his/her own borrowing details, the number of items on loan, any pending or overdue item(s), loan history, and enquiries submitted.
    1. Click on the account details and follow the instruction to sign-in.
    2. Your borrowing information, number of loans/reservations, enquiries, etc. are displayed.
    3. Remember to when you are done checking any of the My Account options.

Saved Searches
allows each user to access his/her own saved searches:
    1. Click on the Saved Search and follow the instruction to sign-in.
    2. Your saved searches history will be displayed.
    3. Click on any of the saved search to re-run the search and get up-to-date results.
    4. Remember to when you are done checking any of the My Account options.

Arabic Materials
    1. To switch to the Arabic language click on ALT + Shift at the right hand side of the keyboard.
    2. To display the hitlist (search results) of titles or information in Arabic (from right to left), proceed as follows:
      • Put the cursor on the hitlist window.
      • With the right click mouse go to Encoding then to Right-to-Left Document, the screen will be shifted to right to left display and allows users to see information in Arabic in the correct way.

Helpful Hints
    1. The database is not case sensitive (it accepts lower and/or upper case).
    2. Minor spelling differences or errors do not count at the end of any search term.
    3. Leading articles and prepositions (a, an, the, of, for, Çá, la, le, etc.) are ignored in the search query.
    4. If you do not know the complete title or name or subject, you can use the truncation sign (%) in place of the unknown words. The truncation sign (%) replaces all possible variations of a character in a word, or a word in a sentence.
    5. To access the bibliographic information of any title, click on the title hyperlink.
    6. The View column may have an icon per title. This icon permits to check the attached object/document, or go directly to the online version, if available.
    7. The Availability field of any item, appears at the end of the Title details screen.
    8. In order to generate and ISBD list, check the box Tick to Select, then click on Show Selected.
    9. In order to limit your search, use the Filter option by Date, Location, Media Type.
      • Before the search: Select the filtering option(s), then click on Go button.
      • After the search: Click on Filter button, select the filtering option(s), then click on Go button.
      • In Subject search: There is no filtering option for the produced Subject Headings list.
    10. All AUB users with net accounts can place a non-active reservation for any item on loan; the reservation will be activated by the Circulation staff. Only Standard Loan items may be reserved. When the item is held, an e-mail notification is sent to the user to inform him/her that the item is in the library and available for borrowing.
    11. To place a Reservation, a user barcode/password is required; follow the instructions after you click on Reserve a copy button. Any person who does not have a user net account cannot benefit from the Reservation and My Accounts options.
    12. It is advisable to sign Out after each session, when you are done using LIBCAT.
