Access to Collections

All users may access the online library catalog at http://olib.aub.edu.lb/cgi-bin/jl_w207.sh from any computer on or off-campus to search the collection of books, periodicals, microfilm/fiches, theses, projects, etc., available at AUB.
AUB users can access a variety of electronic resources through the Internet or on CD-ROM from the library webpage hhttp://www.aub.edu.lb. Use of electronic resources is limited to current members of the AUB community with a valid AUBnet account (AUB email account).

Location of Materials

Books are housed in stacks on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors. The Circulation staff retrieves books from the stacks.

Current issues of serials are displayed on open shelves in the Serials Reading Room, 1st floor, in Jafet Library. Bound volumes of serials are kept in the stacks. Electronic journals are accessible from the library webpage.
Reference materials are kept on open shelves in public areas. The general print reference collection is shelved in the Reference Department, 2nd floor. Audiovisual materials (DVD/CD-ROMs, microforms, videos, etc.) are shelved in the Audiovisuals Room (access is handled by the Reference Department). Readers/printers are in Audiovisuals Reading Room/Computer Lab, second floor). Electronic Reference sources are accessible from the library webpage.

Archives and Special Collections (AUB archives, theses, projects, closed area books and serials, manuscripts, photographs, posters, and maps) are located in Jafet Library, 1st floor. They are consulted on the premises.

Course Reserve materials are in the Reserve Reading Room, Jafet Library, 3rd floor. Use of these items is limited to members of the AUB community. Most of the reserve materials are also available online for access by students registered in the course.

Circulation

A current, valid AUB identification card must be presented in person before any item may be borrowed. Circulation rules apply equally to students, faculty, and staff. Library users will be held responsible for materials borrowed in his/her name. All loans are renewable, in person, provided another user has not requested the item. Non-circulating materials are borrowed with permission.

Stacks and Reading Areas

Reference Reading Rooms and Stacks: The Reference Department consists of two sections: The Reference area with its collection of over 23000 volumes, and the Audiovisuals section with its collection of over one million items. Library users have free access to the reference stacks, but not to the Audiovisuals storage area. The reference reading room is a QUIET study area for 158 students.

The Reference Department is open during Library Hours.
The Reference staff is always ready to answer users' queries and train them in using library resources and retrieving information using print and online tools.

There are five photocopiers at the entrance of the Department (one for color copying), with three magnetic card vending machines.

Serials Reading Room and Stacks: The Serials Department is located in the basement of Jafet Library.
Current issues of most of Jafet Library print periodicals are displayed in pigeon halls in the Department's reading room. High risk and heavily requested titles are kept behind the Department's Front Desk. E-journals and Database are accessible through the Library webpage.
Serials holdings information, serials content information, and current serials check-out are provided by the Serials Department staff at the Department's Front Desk.

Archive and Special Collecitons: The Archives and Special Collections (ASC) Department is located in the first floor (basement) of Jafet Library. It acquires, processes, and services the University Archives and six special collections: Theses-Dissertations and Projects, Closed Area books and periodicals, Manuscripts, Photographs, Posters, and Maps.

Hours and Services

• The ASC Department opens from 8:00am to 5:00pm on weekdays.
• Theses and closed area books can be consulted after closing hours in the Library Circulation Department. Arrangements to this effect should be made at least twenty minutes before the ASC Department's closing time.
• Since most of ASC materials are of fragile nature or unique and very valuable, they are consulted within the Department. The reading room is restricted to the consultation of the Department's materials only.
• Most of the theses, dissertation, and projects can be photocopied in their entirety. Authorized photocopying is done within the Department.

All manuscripts are on microfilm and can be viewed in the Audiovisuals Section. The photograph and poster collections are each divided in two parts: AUB and non-AUB.

Computers

There are computers in the Lobby area dedicated for library catalog search (OPAC). These workstations are available for AUB users and guests. Other computers dedicated for Internet search, are available for AUB users only. Network and card-operated printers are available for users.

Audiovisuals Reading Room / Computer Lab

The Jafet Computer Lab is located in the Audiovisuals Reading Room. The lab houses a large number of computers, network printer, card-operated printers, and a scanner, that are available to AUB students and faculty with a valid (active) AUBnet account. Users can browse the Internet, run Microsoft Office-2000/XP applications, SPSS, Telnet, and more.

There are also few microfilm/microfishe/microcard readers and printers, Television sets, video-tape/DVD machines. A tape recorder is also available upon request.

The Audiovisuals Reading Room/Computer lab is open during Jafet Library Hours.

Reserve Reading Room

The Reserve Reading Room houses all items put on reserve by faculty members during a semester. The Reserve Reading Room is a QUIET reading area for 320 students.
