As you may know the University and its non-academic personnel
are subject to the Workmen's Compensation Law of September
16, 1983 as amended by law No. 220 of May 9, 2000.
The University is legally required to have an insurance
policy covering the compensation which would be due to an
employee in case of a work accident in addition to medical
expenses related thereto.
The administration is now negotiating with the University
insurers to obtain such insurance coverage. You will be
informed of the details in due course.
In this context I would like to remind you of the following.
- All formalities relating to work injury will be channeled
through the Benefits Coordinator. Please note that:
- It is the sole responsibility of the employee to
inform his/her supervisor promptly of any accident
occurring during work and to notify him/her immediately
of the circumstances of such accident.
- It is the responsibility of the Physician of the
University Health Service (U.H.S.) to examine the
cases of injured employees and to complete the "Accident
Report Form" and to advise the supervisor concerned,
the Benefits Coordinator at the Human Resources Department (Campus)
and the AUBMC Human Resource Office, as the case may
be.
- Each department head or supervisor has the responsibility
for reporting accidents occurring to persons in his/her
department or area of jurisdiction. The "Personal
Accident Report Form" will be initiated by the
supervisor. The upper half of the "Personal Accident
Report" (Form SC-5) will be completed by the
supervisor and sent to the University Health Service
(or Emergency Room if the injured is taken there).
Once the Attending Physician completes the lower part
of the report, the U.H.S. (or the Emergency Room)
will forward the "Personal Accident Report"
to the supervisor concerned who will distribute copies
of the report as indicated on the form.
Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the Supervisor
to complete the Employees Absence Report (Form 14) and forward
it along with the Personal Accident to the Human Resources Department (Campus)
or the AUBMC HR Office, as the case may be.
- The HIP does not cover "any injury or illness for
which benefits are paid for by the employer under the
Law". Therefore, the medical, hospital and surgical
treatment including the 100% of the cost of the medication
will be charged to the cost center of the employee who
sustains the injury together with the sick leave pay.
