Mission
The surgical residency program at AUBMC aims to train outstanding general surgeons with superior knowledge and skills, who will practice the art and science of surgery, keeping the welfare of their patients above all else.
The Program
The program consists of 5 years of clinical rotations. Throughout the residency, emphasis is placed on the development of operative skills through a sustained volume of operative procedures, as well as the gradual development of independent decision-making in
preoperative, operative and post operative care. The clinical responsibilities of the surgical house officer increase in depth and complexity as the level of the training progresses. The major center for this training activity is the American University of Beirut Medical Center, a tertiary care referral center serving both Lebanon and the Middle East. Through rotations at affiliated institutions (Makassed General Hospital), residents are exposed to a community hospital practice, thus rounding up their exposure to cover the entire spectrum of general surgery.
A key objective of the residency training program in surgery is the provision of a proper knowledge base in the field of surgery, which includes the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative management of the surgical patient. Crucial to this goal is the structured educational program upon which each resident builds a strong knowledge database. These conferences include a weekly morbidity and mortality review, a weekly general surgical conference, bedside teaching walk rounds, as well as monthly surgical grand rounds
and conferences. Ample opportunities for clinical, as well as bench research in the core animal lab facility, is available for the motivated surgical resident.
A major strength of the program is the broad-based clinical experience. The program provides the trainees with a broad-based exposure to patients in the areas designated as the core areas for general surgery, advanced minimally invasive surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, surgical oncology, trauma, endocrine surgery, abdominal surgery and surgery of the breast. Ample exposure to the
subspecialties of surgery, including pediatric surgery and vascular surgery, is also provided. The experience is enhanced with rotations through allied specialties like
cardiothoracic surgery, transplant surgery, plastic surgery, as well as
orthopedics, urology and neurosurgery in the junior level years.
The program is seeking to conform to the Residency Review Committee and the American Board of Surgery requirements and
is currently pursuing accreditation with the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS), which we hope to attain within the next 2 years. The program is currently under the guidance of the chief of the
division and graduates two categorical general surgery residents per year.
