What is new in your basket?
On August 23rd a new healthy product was introduced to the basket: naturally produced eggs or Balady eggs as people know them. This was the result of a collaboration with the World Rehabilitation Fund (WRF). A field visit was made on August 21 to check the production system and meet the producers.
WRF is currently implementing a project, funded by USAID's Leahy War Victims Fund, to assist landmine survivors in Jezzine District, South Lebanon, by expanding their income generating capacities through the development of credible and sustainable employment opportunities. Egg production is one component of this project. WRF ensures Quality Control over the production of eggs by:
Making sure that the chicks are raised the natural (Balady) way by contribution to the building of the henhouse according to international standards with at least 150 m2 of outside space for each 200 laying hens. Regular monitoring, on daily basis, of the production process and the origin of the egg. Ensuring regular professional veterinary inspection of the henhouses, chicks, and eggs. Making sure that the chicks are given natural feed composed mainly of corn, wheat bran, barley and soybean. Making sure of the neatness and cleanliness of the henhouses and the safety of the water supply.
By including the eggs on the list of products supplied, the "Healthy Basket" will be fulfilling its objective of supporting needy farmers, this time landmine survivors, while providing healthy food to the consumer .
