CVSP Brown Bag
The Civilization Sequence Program (CVSP) Brown Bag is an informal
discussion series which brings together graduate students and junior
and senior faculty from AUB as well as independent and visiting
scholars. Its mission is twofold: to be an interdisciplinary forum
for the presentation of works-in-progress and to open research at
AUB in the humanities to the larger community. Typically, talks
in the Brown Bag series last 30 minutes with ample time for discussion.
Featured speakers from previous years have included:
Tom De Georges (Harvard University / Centre d'Études
Maghrébines, Tunis) "Tunisian Veterans' Benefits following
the Second World War: Universal Rhetoric, Unequal Reality".
Mark Bayer (AUB, English Department) "Khaki Hamlets".
Noha Sadek (Independent Scholar, Beirut) "The Merchant, the
Globe-trotter and the Sufi: Three Travelers in Medieval Yemen".
Jay Gupta (LAU, Philosophy) "Freedom of the Void: Hegel
and Nietzsche on the Politics of Nihilism".
Paul Meers (AUB, CVSP/Music) "French facades, Italian
interiors: the music of Marc-Antoine Charpentier".
Raid Samaha (AUB, CVSP) "Is Terrorism Morally Justified"?
Sirene Harb (AUB, English) "Slavery and the Reconstruction
of Memory in Gayl Jones' Corregidora".
Muhammad Ali Khalidi (AUB, Philosophy) "Orientalism,
Neo-Orientalism and Oriental Orientalism in the Interpretation of
Islamic Philosophy".
