Sonja Mejcher-Atassi

I am an Assistant Professor in the Civilization Sequence Program.

I obtained my D.Phil. in Oriental Studies from Oxford University in 2005 and my M.A. in Comparative and Arabic Literature from the Free University of Berlin in 2000.

My research interests are modern/contemporary Arabic literature and art as well as interrelations of verbal and visual representations. I have two research projects at the moment, one on book art (livres d’artiste) and another on collecting practices in the Middle East.

I have published various articles on Arabic literature and art, and am the author of Geschichten über Geschichten. Erinnerung im Romanwerk von Elias Khoury (Stories overlying Stories. Memory in Elias Khoury’s Novels). Wiesbaden: 2001, and (ed.). Writing as a Tool for Change. ‘Abd al-Rahman Munif Remembered, MIT Electronic Journal of Middle East Studies vol. 7 (Spring 2007).

I have taught CVSP 204, 250 and 251 and am going to teach other CVSP courses in the near future.
