COMPUTING

software packages

A number of statistical programs and utilities are available for the affiliates and research assistants at CRPH. All these programs run under Windows or DOS.

Statistical Analysis

  • Stata (v8.0): Powerful interactive statistical program
  • SPSS (v15.0): Statistical Package for Social Science
  • StatTransfer (v8.0): Program to transfer statistical data between different programs
  • HLM (v5.04): Hierarchical linear and non-linear modeling; statistical modeling of two- and three-level data structures
  • R (v2.1): Open source language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. Code is available
  • CsPro (v2.6): Tool for entering, editing, and tabulating data from surveys and censuses
  • EpiData (v3.1): EpiData is a software program for data entry and documentation of data
  • EpiInfo (v2002): A set of programs for word processing, data management, and epidemiological analysis designed for public health professionals
  • WinBugs (v1.4): An interactive Windows version of the BUGS program for Bayesian analysis of complex statistical models using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques
  • Rural/Urban Projection (RUP) (v 1.32) : A computer program for performing cohort component projections on one or two areas
The RUP program has features that allow a considerable amount of flexibility for specifying fertility, mortality, and migration
  • Population Analysis Spreadsheets (PAS) (Excel version): PAS consists of 45 spreadsheets for population analysis

 Demographic Analysis

  • Transitional Data Analysis (TDA): Powerful program, offering access to some of the latest developments in transition data analysis
  • ANTHRO: The ANTHRO software package was developed for calculating the WHO/CDC anthropometric indices with dBase files
  • PAS: Population Analyses Spreadsheets are a set of Excel spreadsheets used for the calculation and analysis of population age structure, mortality, fertility, and other indices
  • Mortpack: The United Nations software package for mortality measurement. The package incorporates recently developed techniques that take advantage of the United Nations model life tables and generalized stable-population equations
  • Spectrum: A policy modeling system for projecting future requirements for improving reproductive health

 Utility

  • MS Office 2003: Set of applications for desktop editing, spreadsheets, and slide show creation, e-mail management and other use
  • Reference Manager 10: Program for building and sharing references databases. These references can then be used in MS Word to build bibliographies
  • Ghostscript: Interpreter for PCL, PDF and Postscript
  • MS Internet Explorer: Popular internet browser
  • Adobe Reader 7 : Program for reading PDF files

hardware and equipment

The overall goal of CRPH is to enhance the capability of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at AUB, and to conduct interdisciplinary and collaborative research on population and health in Lebanon and in the region

The immediate objectives are to:

  • Initiate new research on issues at the intersection of population and health
  • Support, stimulate, and enrich interdisciplinary research in FHS, AUB, and the region
  • Promote collaboration among researchers and professionals with similar research interests in Lebanon, the region, and internationally
  • Disseminate findings from research undertaken by the faculty to scientists, policy makers, and the public at large.

policies

The CRPH has the capability of performing its own computation and analysis of all surveys processed in its laboratory. Our hardware and software equipment allow us to perform highly complicated calculations and produce statistical computation of massive data in any desired format regardless of platform and portability.

Policies

The CRPH computer lab is exclusively reserved for research being conducted with the collaboration of the center. All equipment, services, and policies are managed by the center for the benefit of its affiliates.

Lab Access

The computer lab is officially open during normal staff hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm during the academic year, and 8:00 am to 3:30 pm during the summer. Any user needing the lab after hours should come to the lab before 5:00 pm, and may continue work until he/she finishes. In the event, the user will be responsible for closing the computer lab.

Network Account

New users should ask for a network account from the Lab Administrator. This account allows them to use the lab's computers, server, and printer. Password change requests should be submitted through the Lab Administrator.

Data Security

The user is responsible for saving his or her files on the local drive, and for having a backup on the server. Files on the center's server are backed up daily. Data, documents, or other files located on personal computer hard drives will not be backed up. Users are asked to save only a minimal amount of personal non work related files. Users are asked to scan removable disks for viruses, along with e-mail attachments.

Software Disks

A set of CD's containing software and datasets belonging to the center may be accessed through the Lab Administrator, or may be found in the shared folders on the server. Users are allowed to borrow these CDs for external work related use for a maximum of 24 hours.

Books and Manuals

A set of reference books and program manuals are located in the lab. Borrowing them is restricted to inside faculty use for a maximum of 24 hours.

General Rules

Please notify the computer support staff immediately of any problems with computers, printers, or other equipment. When leaving a computer for longer than 30 minutes, please log out. If you are the last person to leave the lab at night, please turn off your computers, the lights, and air conditioners, and lock the door. Users are asked not to print personal material.
