March 17, 2005 Arab Human Development in Comparative Perspective

I divide the Arab world into a sub-Saharan African component, an oil-exporting component, and a Mediterranean remainder. I match each of these components to the corresponding country group in the rest of the world, and compare the increases in life expectancy, educational attainment, and per capita income for the period 1960-2000. The increases for the Arab world are uniformly greater.
