What promotes equal economic development? Largely in vain, international development cooperation stressed first strong states, then strong markets, which recently led to an increased interest in combining strong state with strong markets. This presentation reflected on this development based on various regional experiences. Dr. Marktanner received his doctorate in economics from the Technical University of Ilmenau, Germany. In his doctoral thesis he discussed the interaction of national and international political economic aspects associated with socialist economies' reform process. Prior to joining AUB, he held teaching and research positions in Germany and the US. His research interests include political economy, public policy analysis, and transitional and development economics, all with a focus on the Arab world. |
