While self-rate health (SRH) is an increasingly used outcome measure in social epidemiologic research, very little conceptual work has addressed its meanings. In this presentation, Dr. Abdulrahim provided a review of research which has advanced different hypotheses and views related to what SRH captures. She also presented findings from survey research in which she has been involved and from a qualitative study on the meanings of SRH among Arab immigrants in the United States. Dr. Abdulrahim received her PhD from the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health in 2005 and is currently an assistant professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut. She conducted her doctoral research among Arab immigrants in Dearborn and Detroit, Michigan. Her research interests span social inequalities and health, immigration studies, and processes of racial identity formation. In addition to her focus on Arab immigrants in the United States, in Lebanon, her research attempts to understand how social structural policies impact the health of Palestinian refugees and African female migrant workers. |
