February 25, 2003 Advanced Maternal Age: Population and health consequences
Dr. Hala Naufal
Professor of Demography, Lebanese University

Dr. Faysal El Kak

Lecturer, Health Behavior and Education Department, Faculty of Health Sciences, AUB

Dr. El-Kak summarized the reproductive health outcomes of advanced maternal age. Trends in marriage patterns in Lebanon show in general an increase in the mean age of marriage by two to five years. Recent and ongoing advancements in pregnancy care, birth control methods and ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology), coupled with an increased number of women in the labor force and greater equality in the workplace, have influenced the timing of childbearing for women in the developed world, and to a lesser extent in developing countries. Accumulated literature has shown an increased association of advanced maternal age with several maternal and neonatal outcomes. Maternal mortality increases as a function of maternal age. This is in part related to the increased rate of Caesarean Section deliveries, with its known complications. These outcomes are mainly related to ovarian aging, meiotic errors, and uterine dysfunction. The speakers called for developing new antenatal care packages to include preconception counseling and better pregnancy care for this category of women.
