This presentation was based on a paper written with Dr. Huda Zurayk and Mr. Chadi Cortas. It examined the behavior of the internally displaced people during the last Israeli war on Lebanon, arguing that people demonstrated a high resilience for which they were prepared and which was based on self-esteem, dignity, and strong social organization. It discussed the role of public health professionals in wars and the limitation of applying the concept of “social vaccine” to wars. Dr. Nuwayhid received his MD from AUB
in 1984 and his MPH and DrPH from the Johns Hopkins School of Public
Health in 1985 and1990, respectively. He is also American Board
Certified in Occupational Medicine. His research covers a variety of
environmental, occupational, and public health issues, with a focus
on challenges to occupational health in developing countries, lead
toxicity, neurotoxicity, injuries, and health of working children
