Mr. Khayat discussed the political control of an urban space, by highlighting the denial of the social problems of Nabaa -- part of the Borj Hammoud municipality which emerged in the 1940s -- in the official Lebanese discourse. In examining the history of this discourse he focused on the lost memory of the process of the Armenian refugees’ relocation and the self-building of their community, which was regarded as a unique and successful experience. In the mid-1940s, and as result of population changes -- such as the return of some Armenians to Soviet Armenia and the immigration of displaced Shiites into the area -- a shift in the ideological representation of Nabaa occurred. Thus, the problems of the community were not considered an urban problem, but rather as a cultural problem, as an issue of city reintegration. The post-war era, however, witnessed the beginning of the recognition of these problems, albeit for reasons of political power. |
