RESEARCH BRIEFS

Overview

Occasionally CRPH publishes a Research Brief that offers local community leaders, policy makers and the public at large, a summary of findings reported in a companion working research paper for wider dissemination, focusing on summaries of original, interdisciplinary and high-quality research.

Research Brief 1:
A Profile of the Labour Force in Two Urban Lebanese Communities

Drawing upon data from The Urban Health Survey conducted in 2002 by the Center for Research on Population and Health at AUB, this research brief provides a profile of the labour force in two deprived urban communities on the outskirts of Beirut: Nabaa and Hay El Sellom. Labour force is defined in this brief as follows: any individual actively engaged in employment or actively seeking such employment is considered as being part of the labour force.

The profile highlights several dimensions of the labour force including participation by gender and age distributions, education, place of work, type of occupation and working hours per week. The key conclusions are: (1) the labour market continues to be male-dominated with social restrictions impeding women from fuller participation; (2) there is early entry into the labour force; (3) the labour force is generally low-skilled with a gendered division of certain occupations. When women do participate in the labour force they tend to occupy higher status jobs than men; (4) there are more residents employed outside of the two communities than inside; (5) working hours are generally constant across occupations and places of employment though they point to possible over-work.

Research Brief 2:
Patterns of Household Income and Personal Wages in Two Urban Lebanese Communities

Drawing upon data from The Urban Health Survey conducted in 2002 by the Center for Research on Population and Health at AUB, this research brief looks at patterns of household income and personal wages in two deprived urban communities on the outskirts of Beirut: Nabaa and Hay El Sellom.

The outstanding features of these income patterns are highlighted as well as resident's own assessments of whether or not they consider themselves poor. It is concluded that whilst household income is quite low in both communities and that a large proportion of community residents regard themselves as poor, Nabaa seems to fare slightly better than Hay El Sellom in terms of aggregate averages. The conclusion comments on the implications of the data findings for income security and equality.
