the Chemistry Department!

Besides being in the heart of the Natural Sciences, Chemistry plays a central role in a variety of important areas such as the industry, agriculture, biology, food technology, nutrition, pharmaceuticals, engineering, environmental science and medicine. In October 2001, the Chemistry Department at AUB started the implementation of a new undergraduate curriculum. In June 2004, the first wave of B.Sc. students following the new course track graduated. The Department focuses on the four major branches of Chemistry namely analytical, organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. The program provides you with a strong theoretical background as well as a good practical training that will prepare you to go into any of the above mentioned specializations, or continue your career as a professional chemist. After your graduation with a B.Sc. in Chemistry, you can pursue your higher education in Chemistry at AUB leading you to the Master’s (M.Sc.) degree. The Department has an ambitious graduate program and conducts research in all the above-mentioned areas. It used to have a Ph.D. program, which is only temporarily suspended (since 1978, when the last (11th) Ph.D. degree was granted). The Department will present a proposal for restoring the Ph.D. program in December 2005. We are thus full of hope that the program will be soon unfrozen. The Department also prepares you for entering the Medical School at AUB, provided you take required Biology and Physics courses as your electives. Chemistry, along with the other Science Departments at AUB (Biology, Physics and Geology) and the school of Engineering, enjoys the presence of an important core facility, namely the Central Research Science Lab (CRSL), which groups state-of-the-art instruments for use in teaching and research. Social activities are frequent and lively in the Chemistry Department due to the efforts of the "Chemical Society". Junior and senior Chemistry students are always the warm-welcoming host of the incoming sophomore students, and the whole group enjoys a cozy atmosphere of friendship, harmony and entertainment, yet side-by-side with studying motivation and perseverant work. Welcome to your Chemistry Department and happy new academic year! September 2007 |
