An opening in the wall that separates the
two sides of the heart. This opening is in the upper part of the
heart.

Cause usually unknown. Generally not
inherited from parents and definitely not fault of parents.

If the opening is large, heart must work
harder. More blood goes to lungs and they can be congested.

Many children have no symptoms. Some may
fire with exercise and have frequent chest colds and pneumonia.

Yes. It can be fixed. This is usually
done in childhood to prevent heart problems in adult life.
6. What can the child do ?
Play and work normally.
7. What should the parents do?
Follow doctor's advice on:
(1) giving medicines
(2) return visits to doctor
(3) special tests
This child usually needs no special precaution with dental
procedures.
