What are the application requirements for the CAMES MA program?

Students are required to submit a complete graduate application to the AUB Admissions Office. Students should have a GPA of at least 80 or 3.0 and good recommendations to be considered for admission into the CAMES MA program. Since spaces in the program are limited, the admissions process to CAMES is quite competitive.

What are the course requirements for the MA Degree at CAMES?
Students are required to complete twenty-one credit hours of coursework (seven courses), usually taken over a period of three to four semesters. These seven courses should be: MEST 301 Introduction to Middle Eastern Studies, two Arabic language courses (for non-native speakers of Arabic) and four other graduate courses to be selected from CAMES or from other departments at AUB. No more than 9 credits of language instruction will count towards the MA degree. In addition to the coursework, the student is required to prepare a thesis.

How does the course MEST 301 Introduction to Middle Eastern Studies work?
The main course requirement for the MA program is that all students take MEST 301 Introduction to Middle Eastern Studies. It is offered each Fall semester and surveys a range of topics from a variety of academic disciplines that relate to the Middle East. A different AUB professor is invited each week to give a session related to his/her field of expertise in Middle Eastern Studies. Reading lists and articles are made available to the students prior to the lectures. Students are required to submit three short analytical research papers relating to topics covered in the seminar.

What type of courses are available at the graduate level for students pursuing their master's degree?
Students may select any graduate course offered at AUB that is related to Middle Eastern Studies. CAMES students take courses in Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology, Anthropology, History, Economics, Urban Planning and Arabic. CAMES students may also take up to two tutorial courses as part of their coursework. For these tutorials, they may arrange for an individualized program of study with a particular professor.

Is it possible to take CAMES courses without applying to the MA program?
It is possible to apply to AUB's Faculty of Arts and Sciences (but not directly to CAMES) as a Visiting Student or as a Special Student Not Working for a Degree in order to take courses at AUB. Students at the graduate level may take all CAMES courses except MEST 301, which is reserved for CAMES MA students. Please check the Admissions Office website for application forms and information on applying.

What level of English is required for the CAMES Masters program?
Since the language of instruction at AUB is English, CAMES requires of all its students a high level of proficiency in English. Non-native speakers of English who are graduates of universities where the language of instruction is not English will be required to pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or its equivalent.

Are applicants to the CAMES Masters program required to have a previous knowledge of Arabic?

No previous knowledge of Arabic is required of applicants to the MA program. All students in the MA program are required to take at least two Arabic language courses (no more than three Arabic language courses may count for credit towards the MA degree).

What are the fees for the master's program?
The tuition fees year are listed online and in the AUB catalogue. During the academic year
2008-2009, the cost of a credit at CAMES is approximately $590, and this amount will likely increase at least incrementally in the next year. In addition, registration for the MA thesis costs approximately $4,000. The cost of the MA thesis is paid once and covers a student's thesis registration for four semesters. Students will also incur further administrative fees during their registration.

What form of financial aid is available through CAMES?
A limited number of graduate assistantships are available each semester. Students employed as graduate assistants at CAMES work on the CAMES Newsletter, organize an informal "Brown Bag" lecture series, maintain the CAMES departmental library and perform a number of other administrative tasks at the Center in return for a waiver of their tuition fees. An graduate assistantship application is included in the MA application or may be downloaded off the Admissions Office web page.

Is it possible to contact some current or former students?
Please contact CAMES if you would like to get in touch with current or former students.
